Daz, I'm sure we've mentioned before but we have very similar times...I've managed to start to tighten my relationships between the shorter stuff and the longer efforts, and like you say it's all in the mileage.

Last week I hit 80 miles for the first time, and have been averaging mid 60s for the year to date. A lot of this is just commuting miles, rather than training as such, and taking every opportunity to extend my commute by 15-20 minutes if work allows, squeeze in the odd lunch run, and have started running the 4-5 miles to/from a local parkrun to extend my Saturdays.

My 10k is now in line with my 5k PB, I ran my first club run last night (a 10 mile tempo) in 6:15 pace, which is better than any pace I've hit for that distance in a race. This was on the back of 98 miles in teh previous 8 days, so I'd hope there is a 60:xx 10 miler in my locker?

Here is my relationship:

5k (parkrun) - 17:34 (5:39 pace)
10k - 36:49 (5:56)
10m - yesterday's tempo 62:37 (6:15)
Half (hilly course) - 1:28:59 (6:48)

Marathon - 3:02:28 (6:58).

I'd like to think I'll be improving on all of those PBs if I can keep up this training and stay injury free for the year, but definitely the HM, and the marathion are the 2 I think I'm likely to take a chunk out of.

Jeez, god only knows Huntsman... I'm in new teritory for me with this current spell of training. I don't like the sound of that, but always feel I am a bit of a soft runner (mentally)...and with a good spell of training to build the confidence I might get near that level.

I've entered the Sheffield Half in early April, and my plan after that is to do a bit more specific 5k/10k training (incorporating speed work and intervals), and try to break 17 for 5k and get as near as I can to 35 for 10k.

I'm not running a marathon until the Summer (I don't think, although have half an eye on Liverpool in May), so I'll go back to my Hadd-lite approach, or maybe even attempt the sub LT runs with a bit more commitment for a bit in the Summer, before jumping onto a more traditional marathon training schedule in the run up to York.

All presuming I have an injury free year and manage to keep up this sort of mileage...I'm hopeful.

*Sorry the Yorkshire marathon (York) is early October, not the Summer.

I think you are spot on Brunski re mileage. I need to seriously up mine but couldn't much more at min due to foot injury!

Hi guys

I'm looking to build mileage and train according to the HADD methodology and was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation on a reasonably priced (yet reasonably accurate) heart rate/distance/pace monitor?

Hello face (!).

I've read enough of other people's struggles with accuracy (or just plain wrong data) to suggest you avoid wrist HRMs. So you're looking for a chest strap.

If you don't already have a pace/distance watch (I assume) then the spec and features of that will be what determines the price - having a heart strap on top just adds a bit on top (e.g. 30-ish quid on the top of the price of a garmin GPS watch).

So it's all about how fancy a gadget you want, and how much you want to pay...

If you have plenty of time on your hands to read into it all, then dcrainmaker (https://www.dcrainmaker.com/blog) does the most detailed reviews of all this stuff and more.

If not, then look at what "garmin gps running watch" brings up on Amazon and go from there.

I use a garmin 310xt, but I'm sure they're probably out of production now. Someone with a more recent recommendation will be along soon...

I'd agree with ptb on avoiding the wrist based HRMs. Despite improving whilst using it, I now feel I'm pretty much starting all over again trying to establish a true max HR and set some good zones to base my training on.

I think the Amazon idea is good and any Garmin watch with a chest strap would be accurate IMO. Im sure you'll pick up a good bundle (watch and strap) for under £100.

If you're after a bargain, or a more advanced model I'd also have a look on eBay...you may get one that is hardly used, new or reconditioned for a good reduction on the RRP price.

I agree with ptb about dodgy HR from wrist based watches. So I was very surprised to read that Marigold ran Comrades just on his HR with a Garmin 935 wrist based HR monitor. He only had his HR showing on the watch and said it was very accurate.

The are getting better by all accounts. If they weren't, Garmin wouldn't have put it on a high end watch. Skin tone and the way you wear them do seem to affect them though.

I think Brunski had a first generation one so likely to have more trouble.
