Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Cheers guys, and yeah Baz, my heart was nicely under control, my breathing regular, but my legs were definitely feeling yesterday's efforts (and still are)

I reckon you'll be there by early spring if you stick to it Daz. You've got very similar 5 & 10k times to me IIRC, so when you build your aerobic engine you'be already got the pace 😀

Brunski - You say TomTom behaved itself but there's very little change in the avg HR when you run the first few at 6:30 to 6:40 pace (If that's sub 70%, that's great pace), then drop to 8:30 then back to into the middle. Was the route that hilly?

Slight incline going out, seemed like it took a while to get my HR up to 140 (hence the quick start), settled in my band of 135-145, but toward the top end (slowing when I went out the band), didn't check the pace at all. There was a total of 791ft of elevation, mainly in miles 5-6 and 8-9 I think.

Can't categorically say TomTom working (it's had its ups and downs), but effort matched the watch readings for me. The pace dropped at the end due to tiredness 5k yesterday and a double 230ft hill today.

Whether my max HR of around 205bpm is another question as I tend to race a 10k at around 155-165, and this should really be higher (I think). Maybe I've got a freaky heart??

Brunski I get within 4/5 beats of my max HR during a 10k.

Your HR figures don't look right to me.

Brunski- I`m not speeding up my warm up to get the Zone. I suppose if you want to risk it, then straight in. Or do you do some other non-running HR-up method? I`d be interested to know how you go from cold to warm enough not to ping anything directly. Or are you keeping the warm up off your charts?: I have none to present so am only grateful for you have to say.

I get close to max HR in the sprint finish but simply can't maintain it for all of a 10k. I've said before (on here I think) that I think I'm relatively soft when it comes to discomfort. Others seem able to put themselves through real stress for a period of time. Any more than 3k at over 85% of my max and I'm wanting to stop and walk.

Gluco - Nah the warm up for these is simply a few hundred yards steadier and then raise from the 110 or whatever I'm doing as a steady run up to the 140bpm.

My HR max might be way off but I think I hit threshold around the 160bpm and can't stand going much beyond that other than the last mile if I'm really trying to get a time...Others are near their max from after the first mile all the way through. Maybe I'll try and run a 5k purely at 90% plus heart rate but feel I'm likely not to complete it.

You don't race to HR! In a 5k your HR is likely to climb all the way through anyway. And given you have dodgy HR monitor it would be foolish even if it was generally a good idea.

That said, your numbers don't really stack up TBH.
