We took about 4 attempts to get gas. Made the mistake of buying an empty one, then found the place we bought it didn't fill them up! Finally sorted it at Go Outdoors.

Regarding prices, campingaz is not the cheapest sadly, and not everywhere stocks it, but it is what is fitted with the van. A large bottle generally lasts us a couple of years, so it’s fine. When I was in NI in 2022 we could only find a small replacement when our large one ran out (which we kept), and this is the small bottle we exchanged yesterday. We now have two large although one is about 1/4 full but as we’re going to Spain for about a month soon, so wanted to be ready for that.

I think it's easy enough to change the regulator to another type. If it's lasting that long though, it's not worth the worry.
Our last van came with a small Calor. 4.5KG maybe. It lasted the entire time we owned the van - over 3 years.
Our new van uses the gas for a lot more than just cooking though; heaters, fridge, oven, hob, outdoor BBQ hookup... I do expect it to run out a lot quicker.

We made the decision to put in a refillable cylinder. It's not super easy to find LPG stations in the UK, but we manage ok, and have an app which gives us locations and prices. It does mean we can fill up in Europe, where we couldn't exchange a British cylinder.
We don't get through much either, although run the fridge off it when we don't have electric, and sometimes heat water for a shower. Main use is cooking.

I considered refillable (still may do so), but I worried that I don't use enough gas to ever recoup the the installation costs.

we've got two Gaslow refillables - there wasn't a calor with the van when we bought it and they were hard to get hold of post covid, so refillable was the only option at the time. Cost £11.50 to fill one tank at Brownhills, the dealer - which isn't the cheapest place around - last time.
(We also have a local campsite with a gas pump, but that is even dearer)
5 nights off grid, the fridge on gas, cooking everyday, with hot water on twice a day and the heating on briefly two evenings and one morning - we've used a bit over half a tank.
I think we worked out we have 5-7 nights worth in the winter unless the heating was on 24/7. The tanks should pay for themselves in about 3 years at this rate, but we don't waste any changing 'early' or have to manhandle the bottles.

Our van is a 2016 and although it just passed its MOT a couple of days ago (all fine, except front pads) we may upgrade at some point, so I’m happy with our current gas bottle setup for our usage.

2016 isn't exactly old - ours is 2018 and we're not planning on changing it. The newer ones aren't built so well either judging by grumbles on the fb pages.

Ours is 2014 and I expect it will do another 10 years at least, whether it’s with us or not…
