Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

C Block - there's no place like it.

This is long, but deserves to be recorded for posterity.

Dear all,

If you've walked along the landing above the Entrance Hall in the last few days, you may have noticed a bit of a change to this space. Staff in Education and User Services have been carrying out User Experience work in the Entrance Hall and first-floor balcony over the last few months. The current furniture rearrangements are a month-long follow-up to this research, which has included behavioural mapping observations, requests for written comments from users and in-person interviews.

The research so far suggests that the Help Desk might be better positioned for users at the top of the stairs. Rather than spend money or too much time switching this around permanently and potentially finding that it doesn't work as expected, we are having a one-month trial using existing UL furniture. The Help Desk will operate from the top of the entry stairs for a month.

The two sofas that were in Aoi 2 are in the space where the Help Desk previously was, along with a coffee table. Observations made during the initial behavioural mapping phase suggested that some people use the first floor as a meeting place, or as a place to sort their items out before they go to other areas of the Library - this intervention is intended to meet this need.

Over the month's trial, we will collect staff feedback, compare enquiry stats between the two Help Desk locations, ask for user opinion and carry out more behavioural mapping observations. We may try a couple of other layouts. The findings will all then go towards future planning for this space.

After a month, it is planned that everything will go back to how it previously was, with the sofas removed and the Help Desk returned to the centre of the balcony. We will revert, assess, and then see what things we can implement in the short/medium term from the trial. Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback. Thanks to all those that staff the Help Desk, Facilities Management and Digital Services for making this trial possible.

Best wishes,

I was picturing Helpdesk at the top of many many flights such that walking to see them would dissuade most from even trying
