Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Not really a tri question but two people recently asked me if I feel it when I run or bike the day after doing the other one. I biked fairly hard yesterday and will move about a bit later in a relaxed recovery kind of way.

The question is if there is a proper training reason after a hard bike ride to choose a relaxed spin instead of plodding along at not much more than a jog. Is there any reason to pick one instead of the other?

Hmm nice question Winded, i would do something else rather than more of the same, though im not really sure why, perhaps because it would use slightly different muscles....

be interested to hear other opinions though.

Winded- no

On many days I run and ride on the same day. Some days I double ride. Some days I double run.

As a rule my week

Has running on a Monday riding on a Tuesday running on a Wednesday riding on a Thursday and a Friday running on a Saturday and riding on a Sunday.

I am a cyclist first though so you can assume there may be riding on the running days

Thanks Gobi - I'll go for a run then. I imagine like most things at my level it is just better to do something rather than nothing.

I think I just got it in my head that a lot of training plans have recovery ride or recovery run the day after a hard effort of the same activity.

I reckon the day after a race, a half hour jog or gentle ride or swim (not for Gobi!) will do you good. If you are stiff, walking is a good compromise. Get the muscles moving and the blood flowing but don't do anything that will make you any stiffer.

The half-hour walk, jog or gentle ride is your recovery - a kind of "active recovery" rather than sitting on the couch eating biscuits (which also has its merits)

Works for me, anyway!

If it's the day after a race and I am sore then I would ride or do nothing.

Different question to the training mix really.

My training plan set by my coach normally has alternating ride/run days with the swim as a 2nd session on either of those, no pattern to when the swim happens.
After a hard bike or a race it's generally an easy spin on the bike. That's means low resistance high cadence. Specifically to get lactate out of the muscles and loosen up without putting too much pressure/impact through the legs. Makes sense to me and Seems to work for me too. Whether I ever actually feel like it is another question!

Yesterday was a bike race. I felt stiff but not sore so I interpreted Gobi's advice to mean I could go for a gentle run. My legs didn't work; good thing I was trying to go slowly.

I've just done the club handicap race, the day after my first tri. Not surprisingly, I was slower than race 1 last month ;-)
