They were looking even better last night straight after a run in the offending environment! But I didn't let any of the little blighters catch me this time! I must admit I just let them crawl all over me on Friday night as "I don't usually get bitten" is my typical refrain. They haven't been that itchy though, which surprised me. |

After thinking about hills and their impact on pace etc I chose to drive up to the nearest canal and run 10 miles out and 10 miles back on the tow path, which fortunately has no stiles, gates, locks etc so is as pan flat as you can get, though some bits are more trail than tarmac. Anyway, allowed me to target a nice even pace, which I more or less achieved. Found it difficult to hit my target of 8:30s on the way out, something like 8:23 felt more natural, so ran out with that sort of pace. Turned around and realised I'd had a tailwind all the way, but with avg HR at that point at 133 and the current HR of about 138 I decided to try the next few miles running to a target 138-140bpm. Soon got bored of that though, so ditched that after about 3 miles whilst the pace had dropped down a little to compensate for the headwind and the self imposed HR limitation, and went back to keeping a close eye on pace instead, which I did let drift by a few seconds to make up for the wind. All felt fairly easy, despite the HR creep. The graph is fairly clear of a steadily increasing HR across the whole run - any thoughts about what that tells me (beyond the blindingly obvious that it got harder as the run went on)? Should I be looking to achieve a similar run but with a more even HR, or is that sort of progression entirely natural and expected? Did the run off a black coffee and banana only, and just one sip of water in the run too, no food etc, which I was pleased with too. http://www.fetcheveryone.com/t-13824985 is the link to the log. |

That's a great run lark this far out from Chester. I know next to nothing about training to HR (maybe re-post on the 3:15 thread as more of those guys are into it). I'd maybe crack on with the training for another month and then repeat that run at the same pace and compare the average HR and amount of drift which should show (hopefully!) that you're a buit fitter by then

I would expect to see the HR increase towards the end as a long run progresses. Ideally though it stays pretty level for the majority. Your pace was pretty consistent, but looks like the HR did drift a bit more than ideal but nothing dramatic. Essentially when better aerobically trained you should be able to hold the HR steady maybe to say 16 miles and then either it drifs up or the pace drifts down.

Cheers Baz. TBH I'm almost as grateful just to get a clean HR trace! Was a useful exercise though to find a flat route to do something like that on, meant all the pace was "honest", with the exception of the benefit of the tail/headwind on the out and back route. I'll definitely be doing that run again and look for improvements. |

Paul a I saw you many times if it was you speaking to Pete (100 marathon club) and the guy with the Lytchett vest on? I went into this marathon undertrained and carrying serious niggles. Should've DNS. Lesson learnt. How did you get on Paul? |

My little training jog of 28+ miles had 2,000 metres of ascent.
