JB you need to go with how you feel, my experience is that Brussels will be number 7 for me in terms of maras, the last 3 have been 3:13, 3:26 and 3:21. The only time I have ever done more than one 20 miler for a mara was the time when I did 2 of them and that was my PB race of 3:13.
The others have ranged between 1 x 20 miler down to 16 miles max so your friend is spot on, it can be done.
However my 20 mile runs have never been closer to the mara date than 3 weeks before.

I agree Woffy - one of the main "problems" I have is that next months marathon will be my 1st marathon (and only 4th race - 3rd is this weekend!) and I don't have the experience of others on this thread. Given personal circs, I am also not able to apply as much structure into my trainining as I would like to.

Did a yasso session on Tuesday there. 10x800 with 3 minute jogging between each rep. My average for the intervals was 3:09 with none higher than 3:12, so I'm hoping that's as good an indicator of race time as I've heard it is.
I'll do my last big LSR on Sunday, 22 miles, and then I'm into my taper.

Well I am going away for the week now (Friday to Friday) to a little holiday village in Midleton Co. Cork called Trabolgan - like a miniature Pontins. Hopefully I will be able to get some good runs in, including the 18 miler planned for this weekend.
Best of luck to everyone racing, MatttheRat I am about to put 100 points bet on you for a PB which breaking 3:15 will be, so look forward to great success story from you and the best of luck. I look forard to catching up on all the news next weekend, as Trabolgan is down in a valley and has no mobile phone or internet coverage.

eL Bee!
John - just to add my twopenneth worth..... You have great basic speed, far quicker than mine! You also have a 20 miler tucked under your belt already! I only did '2' in 2006, on pretty unstructured training, was aiming for 3:30 (which was reasonable for my basic speed at the time) and ran, on race day, 3:16:44! It was my second marathon. I think that 3:15 is WELL within your capabilities, and may well be conservative...... But, you are right about experience. Racing marathon distance gets easier, in terms of knowing how much effort you are capable of sustaining for the full race distance, the more you do. And you've not picked the 'easiest' one for openers
And the point at which novice marathoners realise they've overcooked it, is the point where Snowdonia gets a little more 'sporting':) I can't wait to see how you get on!

LOL eL Bee! - thanks for the vote of confidence. I have a plan re the Snowdonia race, but I may have to reconsider it following the hilly 12.5k race this weekend!
Good luck to all those racing this weekend

10 miles at race pace yesterday, then 23 this morning at 8:15/mile pace. Felt great on both runs. My long run today was going to be 22 miles, but I felt fine when I got that far so I decided to do another mile to get my time on feet closer to my planned marathon time. Finished the 23 miles in 3:08:49 which is close enough to 3:10 for me.
Taper starts now.
