Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think the only one I've read is the Key to Rebecca, but I'm willing to give others a try :-)

I read a lot of John Wyndham when it first came out, and loved it then but don't know if I would now.

I did feel it compared well with a lot of SF.

Recently read The Crysalids by John Wyndham and could see echoes of how things seem to be going. Have been putting off reading The Kraken Wakes as have always thought of it as one of the classics - guess I'll get round to it soon.

Current plodding through Dan Brown's Angels & Demons.

You mean all out nuclear war, destruction of [the majority] of civilisation and the development of new cultures? Yes, I can see what you mean.

I finished the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Well it was OK. We talked about it at book group and just about everyone found it OK. Only one didn’t like it and didn’t finish it.

Our next one is The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. The premise is interesting and I’m liking it so far about 20 pages in. It flows well.

Currently reading M John Harrison's sort of memoir/anti-memoir. Highly recommended so far. He was a fell runner as well as a climber I seem to be able to extricate from the text, which is perhaps Climbers always felt so real to me.

Also a nice little synchronicity, he goes off on a digression about structure (and lack of - and in particular his lack of - in books) and he then talks about how Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet (and the authors contained therein) has the same sprawling, going nowhere in particular. The Weird Studies podcast did a good riff on lack of plot in books/cinema on their "That' ain't plot" dive into Spirited away and trace it back to myth in Apuleius's Golden Ass. Who knew making it up as you go along had such a dignified history?
