Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I just eat a clove of garlic a day. Works a treat at keeping all biting insects at bay all over the world apart from those ruddy horse flies.

Clove of garlic a day works for covid too.

Doesn’t affect the virus itself but guarantees social distancing :-)

It does keep your immune system in good shape, which I think is the reason why I am never ill...

I think the climate/environmental disaster takes place so slowly, it is impossible for people to comprehend. I recorded a high of 34.9 on Sunday, followed by a low of 9.2. yesterday a high of 44.6 and a low of 13.6.
I am not un-used to such temperatures and able to adapt and function well however: I have never seen a shade measured temperature THAT high here.
Combined with the quite strong winds, it was as if we were being blow dried by a giant blow drier. Leaves are curling and crumpling. It didn't feel good. I picked up a distinct feeling of distress from my garden. For the first time ever. I think it draws the line at 40 degrees. It feels quiet, subdued out now. It is already 21 in the shade at 8 am.
Yesterday, I went and gardened with my client from 7 - 10 am. It was cold enough to need a fleece first thing at 13 degrees. When I left 3 hours later, it was 31!!!
It is those contrasts that are so hard for our environment. Those extremes. It is so dry, rivers have all but dried up here. When we do get rain, it is too much in too short a time span for it to be absorbed by the earth. My friend's spring is down to a trickle. I am on Welsh Water. Still, I only flush the loo on a number 2. I have reduced showering to once a week, in the bath, so I can use the water for my food crops. I only water those... I also have a bath once a week. In between, I strip wash with a flannel to remove dust and sweat. Thing is, I have been doing this for some time... Others, for whom climate change moves too slowly to notice, bought an aircon unit and have 2 showers a day. Oblivious of their continuing contribution to the problem.
Ironically, they are all gasping yet they happily take a plane to a country where it used to be this hot and lie in the sun all day for 2 weeks 🙄
I have always been optimistic we could still change things around but yesterday was like living one of my apocalyptic dreams and it felt uncomfortable. Not physically, mentally.
I doubt things are happening fast enough for those who need to see it to realise what disaster is playing of around them. Not helped by generations of in-bread entitlement to consume...

Hann, those who are blind to it, wilfully or through ignorance, will just have seen a lovely English sunny summer's day, good for business, more ice creams purchased, pubs full with drinkers, holiday makers spending money locally, all good.

I have to force myself to read other bits of the internet and media, to see how others can and do view these things. What seems self evident to us, and absolutely proven and backed by science, is dismissed as "just a sunny day". Same with floods, storms and other weather phenomena hitting us more and more frequently. "Oh, it's just the British weather. It will be fine." :-(

A very apt analogy JR.

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
