I know of 4 people who have bought air con units (the in room ones) in the last week, all live in the SE. Making the problem worse

I also think the “technology will solve the problem” argument hampers the real battle which is to effect widespread social change and reduce consumption

I saw this tweet from the Jean Rhys Twitter account, smiled, and thought of this thread. I don't know when she said it, it was probably on the 70s or earlier, but it does rather typify a certain mindset. twitter.com |

mum has just bought an air con unit as her lounge was 32 before this hear wave and as someone with a bad heart that temperature is far from idea but in 2000 when they had the house built she wanted a nice bright airy lounge with lots of windows! and the same for her bedroom |

Fields, it's both, imho. I agree an argument that said "Only technology is needed and that will solve the problem, with rampant consumerism and waste continuing." would be rubbish. But to say "We just need to reduce consumption and we don't need to look at new technologies. " would be equally dumb. We need everything, all of it and yesterday! |

Dio, along that vein, I planted olive trees at my d farm up the road. I was ridiculed but regret not having planted a vineyard as well. We now have a decidedly mediterranean situation going on... My friend's lavender farm in the mid Wales hills. She was ridiculed too... |

I let my garden adapt and water only the bare essentials. Thankfully, herbs are resilient creatures and most of my trees now deeply rooted... What dies gets replaced by what copes... |

Also designed a rain garden. Next year, when I have enough money to pave around my building, the troughs will overflow into an underground holding area and from there flow under my garden, where the water gets soaked in slowly. This means the rain from the roof is dosed slowly, having effect long after a flash storm, of which we are seeing more, has drifted over. I need to "plug" a grey water system into it as well... If only I had laid a spare pipe when I had the trench open... |
