My laptop is am old Dell, 14 years old. It is still perfectly fine, but runs on W7... Which really I should have upgraded to W10 for free while I still could... I have been told I still can, if you know how to, as then Windows recognises your authorised, licensed software. I should ask a knowledgeable friend or Linux it. I did that with my previous laptop which was equally old because I could not upgrade the RAM memory and it would no.longer run the latest version of Windows as a result... That one lasted 17 years before I replaced it with my current one, which I inherited from work, when we liquidated our business. It was still working fine by the way on Linux...

My old phone was 5 years old last year when it became obsolete because the working memory was too small to run the latest guggl update. I am still reeling! It was perfectly fine otherwise. Why can't you just decide to not run update? Guggl pushed it on mobile data after something like a year of me saying no... And the system crashed. I had to clear the cache all the time, only for Guggl to fill it up and crash the system...

I have decided on an immersion heater with a second coil for my new building. I am having to spend a small fortune because of Covid, so now I am making more sustainable choices and decisions along the line... I was going to have an electric shower I was given and use a kettle for hot water in the sink and wash basin in the bathroom...

My old computer about broke because of a Windows pushed update. After a year of hitting “no” day after day, one day it updated of its own accord. Two days later I had to take it to computer hospital. Its days were soon numbered after that.

With my last laptop it was the screen hinge/nearby case section that went after about 5 years. It's the hinge next to the charging port and so I have had to tape the charger to the charging port or the charging port now slips too far into the laptop. I still use it every so often, but it is really not portable. I'd already changed it over to Linux as windows updates had slowed it down too much. Might have to do the same change to Linux with my newer one soon as that is getting super slow already, less pressing though as I now have my work laptop at home too. |

By the way, MS are now pushing Window 11. Yes, 11. So getting old laptops to play ball is going to even more fun! MS could help the world a bit by offering a "Windows Lite" or "Modular" version of their upgrades, so it's still got the current/updatable security and you get to choose which bits of the functionality you actually want, rather than all the bloatware they include as default. But y'know, profit and all that..... ![]() |

Thought this was interesting given recent discussion re: flying and everything else I'm on a 1 in 5 reduction drive of my already low car journeys (I can't drive but we have a car within our household). |
