Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

If he lost but prevented a Conservative majority would his supporters claim that as a victory of sorts?

Personally I hope he goes because I don’t see him leading an effective opposition. Labour should be walking this but are instead stumbling along aimlessly.

Completely SPR. Hence why a decent opposition would be walking an election.

I'm saying Corbyn is toxic but Johnson isn't?

Corbyn has become toxic to many would be labour voters, over Brexit, perceived lack of patriotism, being part of the metropolitan elite etc. Johnson is toxic to less of his potential voters, maybe just hardcore remainers.

Both are extremely toxic to those that would never vote for their parties anyway but that’s not relevant to the result. Being toxic to those whose vote you need to win, the moderate fringe of your own party and swing voters in the centre matters.

BoJo should be toxic to Tory supporters who are not hard leavers.

My mp believes in upholding the leave vote but not a no deal exit and lost the whip as a result- the moderates were purged and voters should take note of what that means.

I'm sure Boris is toxic to some Tories, just not a huge swathe of them. And the Tories, either within Parliament or as a voting mass, are much less prone to airing their disputes in public. Fealty to the leader etc, respect for hierarchy.

Even moderates within the Labour movement are addicted debate, argument, factionalisation, lack of deference to those in power etc etc. So criticism of Corbyn is tolerated, even encouraged to a degree.

The other aspect is of course the behaviour of the print press which, in the main, leans to the right (!). I suspect if a Tony Blair lookalike with Corbyn principles and policies was in charge, the Mail / Express / Sun might have more of a challenge painting him as a demon in the charicatured way that they do with Corbyn, but they've established that narrative well enough for it to be taken as fact.

Bojo as a lovable clown is the established narrative on the other side, even in that press. It's hard to shift that without the press doing it for themselves.

I’ve had several friends, customers, contacts etc say I hope / pray Corbyn doesn’t win. These are people I’ve never heard talk about politics before

I hope / pray Johnson doesn't win! But latest aggregate polls have him reverting to the number of seats May had before the election of 2017:

From twitter "Latest poll aggregates I see put a Johnson majority at 14.

15 marginal constituencies switching would do it. We’re talking barely 40 000 marginal vote switchers now - circa 0.1 of population."

If that happens, the last two years have been totally wasted. To be honest May could have got her deal through in all likelihood if she hadn't have called the election in the first place.

No idea what the result will be but am so glad Corbyn still currently in place.
He is the best asset the Tories have for winning the election.
