Hmph. I'm fine with adding the app - already have, actually - but I'm not fine with being compelled to use my phone for scanning if it's belting down with rain.

The app works great for scanning with the new(!) purple tokens as the wider code print doesn't work well with the opticon scanners in any sort of sunlight. I don't think it is a good solution for timekeeping though

Is this a Fetchforks issue? Should I be sharpening mine? Actually I just downloaded it and had a play, looks very useful generally for timing club things as well as its intended use.

I just downloaded it on my phone (Samsung A50 Android). Seemed to work well. Most phones are waterproof nowadays so no problem of damage to the phone by being out in the rain (though accidental button pushing on touch screens can be problem, for my phone (and Garmin is same) actually).
I don't think many younger people have a problem with putting any app on their phone and being expected to have it with them at all times. (Even an older person like me doesn't have a problem with it, actually!). If it works and saves parkrun money and barriers to set up, then seems only to be a good thing.
Why not make use of the £00s worth of tech that we all carry around with us?
Why did it want Flight Mode to be enabled by the way? G

Most phones are waterproof nowadays Mine is specced for light rain, and doesn't give an IP rating. I do have a waterproof case for it. That's my only reservation here, I think the app works better than the hand-held scanners do, as it goes. Why did it want Flight Mode to be enabled by the way? Because if you have a call come in, it can interrupt the timekeeping; you need to stay in the app continuously till you're done scanning.

I did see a request on one parkrun's FB page asking for people to donate old, unused phones for scanning purposes. I don't know if the uploading can be done with Wifi or if it needs a phone signal, but that would save anyone risking their own phone from accidental damage.

Some of my best volunteers for timing and scanning are the more senior members of our community and not only do I not like to ask them if they'll install the app and use their 4g (no on-site cafe, you see), I don't even like to ask them if they have an internet enabled smartphone.
