Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

@iRicey:

I'd be intrigued to know what the "carefully considered options" that have been done by the Exeter team to decide that people have to take their shoes off in order to get scanned might be. Have heard of that happening at that event previously and think it certainly meets the criteria for ridiculous.

I just hope that I remember to avoid that event if I'm down in that neck of the woods some time.

Nearly 500 metres from the finish funnel to the scanners at Cambridge, assuming you go by the signposted route rather than walking the most direct route and getting in the way of runners. Even the direct route is almost 400 metres.

Larks - safe to say the events i have seen barcode scanning queues enforced have done 2 things

Got people scanned quite well. Plus for sure.

Got very upset that I didn't have my barcode on my person. Grumpy attitude at the unusual is not needed.

I agree I am in the minority but I also run straight back out to friends or do my cool down and don't want to be forced to stand in a queue.

Dvorak - the map is good but slightly flawed. Lullingstone is always purple at this time of year. facebook.com

Funnel straight to barcode scanning isnt practical at all. There is no guidance issued on this so it shouldnt become a 'rule' at some events. Do events that have such a system announce it in their briefing?

I 100% agree with Gobi, Penrhyn Castle had their scanners at the end of the funnel and didn't like it when I ducked out to retrieve my barcode with token still in hand. I also sometimes like to join my wife and finish with her as a warm down before scanning.

At Poole you go back and forth through the taped off funnel, then get your token, then around the back of a building and the only way out is then past the scanners on the other side of the building.

Nothing wrong with funnel straight to scanning if there is space, and there is nothing to prevent you going past to get your own barcode from wherever and coming back to scan.

I really liked Taunton - bit busy up front at the start, but opportunities to move through as the run progresses, lovely crowd and toilets/parking/cafe at the Tesco.

LOL @ Gobi, I suppose I'm just used to what I nearly always see - i.e. from the word "go" at my local one the expectation was that barcodes were on your person, but equally they are a very friendly bunch so never any aggro - it's opened my eyes on here to hear stories of less than amicable experiences (not just yours, plenty of others) so it always surprises me when something challenges my own experiences.

Equally, I'd 100% agree with you that if they are trying to funnel straight through to scanning they absolutely have to accept that some individuals will not have them on them for various reasons (I've done it myself - had to nip to the car, or re-trace my steps on the course when I've dropped the barcode). And do so with a friendly smile!!

I think sometimes when runners duck out of the funnel before being scanned (but after getting a token) the funnel managers can incorrectly assume it's someone who doesn't know what's going on and that's when they might get accosted, though if I'm in that situation I'd just wander through the funnel and explain to the scanner at the end rather than duck out for precisely that reason.

Anyway, it seems funnelling or not funnelling each has their own pros and cons. Such is parkrun!!!
