Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I like Pip. And Ruth, who a lot of people seem to hate.

My friend and I were discussing the Archers (as you do) and we both agreed that because we don't particularly warm to Helen, we found it quite hard to sympathise with her. Which made us think that probably we should try harder in real life to be kind to people, even if they are annoying.

Turns out the Archers is also a useful self-reflection tool :-)

I generally like Ruth too and don't mind Pip.

I used to find Helen really annoying - like most listeners apparently - but decided it was the combination of the actress' voice and her whingey scripts. Since the Titchener Affair I've given the actress the benefit of the doubt as she's played a few blinders.

I think you are right Maz (and the Duchess on the previous page). Also I don't 'like' Kate or Susan but they are good characters - it would be unlistenable if everyone was sympathetic.

Susan and Kate are excellent characters, I agree, Sharkie, but Pip's delivery is so mannered I can't get beyond it.

I've always had a soft spot for Tom though I know a lot of people don't like him. I was very fond of Hayley and think the serial lost something when the Tuckers were excised wholesale, apart from the ghastly Roy. Lilian is wonderful though again, I was sorry when Matt's character was chopped, as I think there could have been a good character-driven 'arc' as the two old rogues settled into late middle age and beyond. (I think Matt's actor implied that he'd like to come back one day, but the then editor, Sean O'Connor, drew a firm line under him :-()

Yes, Hayley was great, script and actress. 'Actresses' I should say, Lucy Davis being the original. I agree about the Tuckers in general.

I've always had a soft spot for Ed. I was disappointed when it didn't work out with Fallon - who practically saved his life after all. Disappointed but it was a well written story line.

Brian and Jennifer are both appalling in different ways but credible as a couple and vital to the story.

I really enjoy the agri-business side of things which the Home Farm / Justin Elliot storylines open up
