Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It occurred to us that since we have been running onthe roads around the village, we have gone back to wearing headphones.

We may be maintaining some sort of fitness physically, but it does little for the souls.

The last patches of snow on the local hills we could see on the run will be gone by the end of the week...
Getting changed for a shower, we saw our mountain pack sat in it's usual spot at the bottom of the wardrobe and it made us shed tears.

We know the hill was there long before us and will be there long after we are gone. That we will return to it.
But currently running is a hollow thing, it lacks the freedom to explore and roam, constrained by time and distance.

So it is ticking over. Better than nothing.

Our mileage is up, but our abilities to work on steep and rough terrain will be deteriorating.

Forced myself out of the house before 5 again this morning. The low-lying full moon was glowing throughout and got the sunrise too. Stunning. Not sure I'd have made the effort if I wasn't trying to avoid people!

:)

If you were running anywhere near me you'd probably see both. I get up and out of the house before my stomach figures out what the hell is going on..

Do it Fetch! I bet if you just head out to that bridge over the 421 at 5.30 it would look pretty amazing.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
