Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Interesting discussion on SARS-CoV-2 spread via aerosols (https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/the-covid-19-coronavirus-may-travel-in-aerosols-67380?utm_campaign=TS_DAILY%20NEWSLETTER_2020&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=85878667&_hsenc=p2ANqtz--us0Hk77ogRSkioheZiEBcgB1FtUeGPbck7vF2cAfXINRhbgtD7rvNEKOEj-sFCL_P7NaKzvabwEc9HFwCGR7J2X9flQ&_hsmi=85878667). If this happens, I am much less worried about it during outdoor exercise than I am going shopping in a supermarket, even keeping to the 2m distance.

Happy - I think fear and paranoia is driving a lot of this curtain-twitcher behaviour.

I'm already tired of people diving into bushes to avoid me when running.

The legislation does not say that you must be 2m from everyone at all times. It says that you must not be within 2m of someone you do not live with for more than a significant period of time (which under WHO advice is 15mins).

We must be vigilant. Not paranoid.

We must all also understand probability distributions a lot better to understand low risk behaviour when it comes to virus propagation.

Sunbathing in the park 2m away from someone is a low rish behaviour. And was a classic example of mission creep and govt overreach.

Similarly the "advice" about exercise once per day and for 30mins according to Mr Gove.

yes I agree 100% with you HG. I think the "stay inside or you're killing people" messaging is extremely damaging. Not to mention infantile and paranoid.

When exercise is outlawed only outlaws will exercise.

Bob!
fozzy

the 2m message is being pushed hard, whilst I am aware of the 15 minute aspect, there is an expectation amongst the public that 2 metres is the safe distance.

I have no problem in meeting those expectations whilst I am out running so that I am not thought to be breaking the guidelines.

I want to be able to keep running during the lockdown

Now Paris has banned daytime exercise - 19:00-10:00 is permitted. (Guardian)

That's an interesting approach. Bit hard to sunbathe at 3am.

At least night time jogging isn't currently spoiled by drunks coming out of pubs and bars throwing up and making stupid remarks. The back garden option is still OK.

I'm hoping to have shifted my symptoms by tomorrow and a similar UK ban will not go down well.

That's a genius move by the French, it will ensure much more crowding just outside of the banned hours. A bit like cutting back on the buses and tubes in London so the passengers still get that in-your-face experience.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
