Aight all. Not been on fetch for a good while. Running has ticked over, but nothing special. XC season kicked off today and what felt like hell on earth turned out to be 4 minutes slower than my attempts at this course in my Hadd heyday.
Think I'll get back on the base building horse for the autumn/winter and see where it takes me. I'm still guided almost every run by HR principles, but I need the volume and structure back that I get from a "formal" phase 1.

Run 1 complete. I'm coming from a non-zero start so no build up to 50 mpw required. I'll kick off with sub LTs this week, which will start right at the bottom, 79-81% MHR.
Tonight was sub 70% target, nailed it with 69.5% average but wasn't too strict on some of the steeper/longer climbs as long as it wasn't above 75%. I purposely chose a bumpy route to avoid any pace worrying. As always (for training runs) my watch only shows time, distance and HR% anyway.
The real action starts tomorrow with a sub LT run.

Might try a sub LT myself tomorrow and see where I'm at. I don't expect it to be that good although my running is at least consistent if not fast or far

Got myself out without too much battling of demons, and once I was out found my mindset just in the right spot. Knowing it'll be slow for now, but also knowing that's just where I am just now, and with patience it'll come good. No rush either, it's late October. A good solid winter of this and I'll be knocking out some decent times for a laugh.
For now though, averaged 7:23/mile for an hour at 80% MHR. I was happy to back off when I saw the HR squeeze up to 81%. Plenty of time for higher Hr when I'm ready. It felt reasonably comfortable, but I'd usually go out to 10 on these and I reckon I might have started to see the beginnings of some drift if I had. I'll work my way up to 10 milers for these over the next couple of weeks.
No targets just now. I think I'll be happy to get through winter season with some highish mileage and some decent XC sessions. Once I feel I'm in a good place I might look up a half or a 10k. I don't want the commitment of a marathon at this point as it just focuses the training on that instead of just working on steady improvement.

Sounds sensible Davie, good to hear from you, hope all is well. You running the XC relays on Saturday?
When I came back to running after 7 months of injury I jogged for weeks until I reached the 50 mile a week marker. Then added in one sub LT of 6 miles and built that up to 10 only all at 80% until I saw no drift, then added in the second sub LT again for 6 miles and built that up to 10. Only then did I start to move the HR % up a notch.
Backed off Hadd at the moment, doing a lot of intensity work with big long runs at the weekend. Some weeks with a fair bit of intensity in the long runs too. See how that pans out for me. I'm enjoying it, so that is always a plus point.

Cheers Boab. Things are on the up, sounds like youre doing well.
Didn't get my name in for relays but I'll do all the East league and district races and I've a couple of club organised XCs lined up as well. National in Feb obvs, and I did the 15k Devilla this year. I fancy that again this season.

Ahh good old Hadd. I've just been rereading the HR bible after a target half (1:26). managed to get 12 weeks intensity and Long run work in with my club group. They're pushing on with even more intensity on Tues and Thurs with XC in mind and I'm really not sure it's what's best for me. SO would really appreciate advice!
I ran a 2:56 marathon in Feb (2:48PB) but have struggled to get the consistent training around family life and a change in jobs. This has settled now, but with a baby due in 2 weeks training time is going to be low on the list! I can fit in 3-5 lunch time 45 min runs and one at the weekend I guess.
So do I go Hadd Phase 1 for Nov -Jan and accept that i wont hit the volume but keep it low HRs, then sharpen for Feb/March for London 2018? or would i be better keeping some LT runs and intervals given the limited volume I can do?!

I love it when this thread comes to live and also to see the progress the likes of Davie and Boab report.
JEK - I find that people react differently to HADD and my experience is that I see improvement as I follow it but eventually plateau and then regress a bit. However, 6-12 months after a HADD phase I start to see some great results. That's different to others.
Think if you do HADD you need to be committed and be in it for the long term
