I'll be getting near 75% MHR from now on for the shorter runs. I was thinking sub 70% MHR as I thought the slower the better but the article makes sense.
I was running too slow before which, I guess, is better than running too fast.

I found that when I started following my HR that I couldn't get my HR anywhere near as low as 70% max and stuck at the 75% for my non SUB LTs until I started to see the improvements.
Although in my recent running I am seeing improvements at SUB LT runs, I seem to have hit a plateau on the 70/75% runs and maybe even am seeing those slip back ever so slightly !

How long did it take to see some improvements Baz?
I reverted to the 5k + 3 mins tonight. I know there is debate as to whether the article means 5k PB pace (that is what it says) but I went out with the aim of between 8:45 and 9s. I ended up at 8:50 avg with a HR of 80.7!
Maybe I have lost fitness quickly in the last few weeks!
Not sure how many weeks/months it will take to get that pace under 75%. I will keep churning out the miles around that pace until it is.
Anyway, it felt like I was doing something resembling running tonight rather than the weekends shuffle!

Daz, looking back in my log it looks like I started in Dec 2011. My recovery runs averaged 131 bpm for 9:47mm, Jan 2012 was same HR for 9:40s but by Feb for 129 bpm I was running 9:20s, so into the 3rd month.

I didn't know you dabbled in this way back then, thought you had only just got going. That's was decent progress in a fairly short space of time (which gives me encouragement!) 30 seconds per mile in 3 months.

Yep, may have dabbled before then but I cannot really remember but do know I first started it for real post my 2011 injury. In fact its almost been my default approach when starting back after injury ever since and I tend to keep the principles for easy runs in whatever other plan I follow. I havent really followed HADD properly though since summer 2013
Just as a random comparison in Jan 2011 at a time when I thought I was as fit as I ever had been I did my recoveries at 142bpm and 8:58mm

Injury is the reason I have took this approach. I can currently only dream of doing your type of mileage.

This is a quote from the thread I linked: "For God's sake, just because "on the whole" Hadd's advice is sound, that doesn't mean you have to unplug your brain and stop thinking for yourself."
The poster was talking about people running too slowly, but the same applies to the PB discussion. If you're seriously off PB condition then using it to set your pace is probably not a good idea. Marginal differences shouldn't be an issue though.

Yep I see that SPR and Thoth I unplugged my brain in Sat afternoon!!!
I will stick to this 8:45-9mm pace for as long as it takes to get under 75%.
