Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Garmin Pay EvilPixie? It definitely doesn't need a phone. It wouldn't make sense for it to need one.

Velociraptor, Garmin training plans are not keen on long runs. When I did the advanced plan for the marathon last year, the longest runs were 2:30 hours, I think I had three of them, all the others were 2:00 or 2:15. My longest runs were around 15-16 miles. I extended one of them to 3:00 hours and 30k (18.6 miles)
2:30 may be enough if your easy pace is 8 m/m or faster, then 2:30 will get you close to 20. (19.75 if you run it at 8 m/m).

So I guess that the suggestions are based on the same principles.

I remember doing a running camp with RW and the guy who ran it (can't remember his name but Anderson seems right?) said that you shouldn't do a long run over 3hrs regardless of your pace.
If you are slow slow then maybe add 30mins walking warm up and cool down so 4 hrs total but the impact/stress of doing runs that are 3+hrs is counterproductive

so maybe that's where Garmin are coming from

Sleep after the Superbowl: 6 hours

Score: 77, short but good REM
Body battery was down to 12, now up to 73
Recovery time 54 hours after yesterday's long run that gave me another 5.0 rating
Garmin suggests active recovery, 32 minutes at 10:50 or 130 BPM. Sounds great, I'll do a 5k with the beginners, will be even slower and HR lower, too. Last week, I discovered that I could run at 13:40 with a new runner and not lose form.
RHR also affected by the long run, up to 48. I'll take it easy for two days.
Training status: productive again! So Garmin is secretly happy that I did a long high aerobic session again even though it wasn't the tempo run it suggested.

EvilPixie I agree with the 3 hour limit as you don't get more aerobic training effect whether you run 3 or 4 hours but the latter is breaking you down a lot more because of the mechanical stress and fatigue. So you need a longer recovery and most likely, you will miss a few sessions in your plan. The breakdown of form also increases the risk of injury.

So I don't run over 3 hours but I found that I probably need the extra 30 minutes. When I did the Garmin programme last spring, I had the cardiovascular fitness but not muscular endurance to run a certain pace for 26.2. So my critique of the Garmin plan is that 2:30 isn't enough, especially when the plan doesn't have a proper midweek MLR. I don't think I ever ran over 75 minutes in the middle of the week.

So I went with the P&D that has both MLR and 3 hour runs. I'll see how it'll turn out. I could do the experiment next year with capping the LR of the P&D at 2:30 hours but keep the midweek MLR (up to 14 miles!) and see if that works, too.

OIC
that makes sense

My last marathon that I actually trained for was 2010!
My last marathon was the virtual LM in 2020 and I err forgot to train haha
my other marathon since 2010 was also a last night thing

so I can't really comment!

This said, when I trained a run/walker to run her first marathon, we went up to 4 hours but she didn't run more than 2:40 hours out of the 4 hours because she used a 2/1 split. Her goal time was 6 hours which she missed because she went the wrong way and ran almost 27 miles.

When I'm training for ultras, I also do longer runs but they will be run/walk so that the total amount of running doesn't exceed 3 hours. I basically treated her marathon like an ultra for me. Time on feet is similar.

About This Thread

Maintained by EvilPixie
According to my Garmin this morning my body battery was at just 41 and I was "strained"
I have been strained for most days in the last 2 weeks
My body battery has also been low

So today it suggested a threshold run of up to an hour!

What's your Garmin say?
