Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Even more oddly, the "history" on my watch seems to go back just under a year and includes activities recorded on my old watch. But when I go to "race an activity" that only shows about the last 6 months of runs in the history, so even if I wanted to I couldn't race the older activities that are on my watch.

larkim, the instructions for my 935 are:

Racing a Previous Activity
You can race a previously recorded or downloaded activity. This feature works with the Virtual Partner feature so you can see how far ahead or behind you are during the activity.NOTE: This feature is not available for all activities.1
From the watch face, select START.2
Select an activity.3
Hold .4
Select Training > Race an Activity.5
Select an option:•
Select From History to select a previously recorded activity from your device.•
Select Downloaded to select an activity you downloaded from your Garmin Connect account.6
Select the activity.
The Virtual Partner screen appears indicating your estimated finish time.7
Select START to start the timer.8
After you complete your activity, select START > Save.

I've never tried it though.

Thanks westmoors - I can do all that with an activity that's already on my watch; my issue is that for much older activities which weren't already on my watch but which are in Garmin Connect there doesn't seem to be a simple way of getting that old activity onto my watch to be able to be used with that process you've described above.

I suspect manually dropping the .fit file onto my watch might work, so that's my next port of call!

To answer your question, larkim, it was all ios. I looked up an old run on GC web interface on an ipad, put it in the send to device queue and then used an iphone for my normal sync to epix. (This is because I only have my watch paired to the iphone; I don't have a pc or mac.)

I recall that the watches retain summary info for more history than they retain the complete FIT file for. Also, True Up syncs summary info from other devices which is where the activities from your old watch came from, but it doesn't transfer the GPS track with the summary.

Makes sense when explained like that Badger, thanks.

Plugging in the watch to the PC and manually copying the .fit file to the watch under the "activities" folder seems to work to do what I wanted to do. A bit of a faff but perfectly serviceable for occasional use.

Got a race on Wednesday night that I wasn't going to use this for (as it's pretty flat so can just race to feel) but will give it a go anyway as it's a course I don't often run so will be a good test of the manual transfer.

Garmin Express on my PC updated itself to v7.12.1.0 this morning. Now it no longer recognises when my 736 is connected, so won't sync via USB cable.
It still charges and I can still sync via Connect on my phone but usually I like to sync via USB to save battery life
Any clues?

larkim (I think it was your question...) If there is pace information stored in the course file the watch can show a virtual partner for it even when following a course rather than an performing an activity. (I think you said you don't have a device with PacePro, otherwise you could build a pace target with more flexibility).

Badger is right in that older watches with limited storage drop the detail of the run (i.e. the track points) while still retaining the summary info.

Thanks flanker - I've read that that is actually a good workaround for some bugs in the "race an activity" mode anyway (transfer as a course and then set up the screens so that they do the virtual partner stuff anyway).

I may give that a go with an old activity tonight if I remember. Thanks!
