And yet still broke both the race record and the descent record! He got bandaged up but wasn't around for the prize giving as he headed off to A&E.

This is sort of humble brag as a parent, but mainly a genuine question. Eldest son has always preferred fell / xc but doesn't always find time. But he made it to high cup nick this weekend which I believe is a decent race, and finished 2nd ahead of last year's FRA champ Bill Cartwright and in what looks to be very good company overall. He wants to see if he can get into the "counters" for the champs this year but a lot already seem sold out. How likely is it that he could email the organisers with "I beat Billy Cartwright last week" and stand a chance of them opening up a place for him? |

Bloody hell. Well done junior larkim. Not sure I can really help with your question, other than I know there are pre slots available to those likely to be challenging for overall or category prizes to avoid what used to be a race for places. It was only changed a couple of years ago. |

Think he's missed Flower Scar completely. And possibly Lad's Leap. But entries shouldn't have opened for the other 4 yet. But be advised Buttermere Sailbeck and particularly Wasdale are extremely challenging races - if he's not done much high fells stuff, be better to try and do a few med/short lakes races to get some experience. |

If you haven't also already seen, there are some further details here (link below) about entry into the guaranteed entry list. The deadline was last December, but it does say it remains open on an ad hoc basis. There's contact details on there too. fellrunner.org.uk |

Thanks both. As the "dad" I've been all over how to navigate the world of XC and track etc, but fells is new to me so just trying to help out. He's pretty experienced now, really, this wasn't his first fell race; he's won a few "village show" type ones up in the North East. He did a "Tea round" in the Lakes a couple of years ago so is well used to being out on his own, navigating etc in unpleasant surroundings. Maybe I'm underestimating the difficulty as it's not me racing them! Looks like he doesn't meet the criteria for the guaranteed entries - got to do some counters first I suppose. |

Maybe enter what he can this year, get qualifiers where needed, plus more experience of racing ant this level, and go for it next year. Sounds a talented lad Just a heads up - I seem to remember the whole who should get guaranteed entries for Championship races question can become a bit emotive ![]() |
