Never done a fell race and train on Essex roads, trail and XC. I need to choose a fell race and get my feet wet before the notion wears off. I'm thinking of a three to four hour drive from Essex, make a weekend of it and do something that's manageable but worth the bother. Any suggestions?

If you've never ran in the high fells before, then I would respectfully suggest that might not be the best starting point. What sort of distance race do you have in mind?

They would have made good weekends away I’d be minded to not focus on the distance as the style of event first. Can you / do you want to navigate if needed? Do you want to sample the crazy exhilaration of what I call a ‘race you to the top of the hill and back’ short race? One event that springs to mind is the Thursday night one from Kettlewell - the Anniversary? It could be combined with a weekend race too and a weekend in the dales

Ingleton gala race is another good choice in the area though the weather is more likely to be grim
