A moorhen without the red is a coot. Easy to remember which is which as "moorhen" has an R for red in it. |

Dave A has beaten me to it, but I am going to keep a list of sightings for 2017.....along with my usual list of mileage, runs, cross training, beers and new pubs....

I thought a coot was like a moorhen but with a white beak. It did look like that photo - we are surrounded by rivers so it didn't have far too wander to get to us.

I was going to do a list, but I've forgotten to keep it up to date already. Erm..... GSW in the cottage garden in the Lake District yesterday. I'm pretty sure I saw a Buzzard too. |

Red beak = moorhen White beak = coot But I think when they're young they don't have coloured beaks. The feet are the other distinction, I've had to check and it was the other way round from what I thought, moorhens have long thin toes, coots have a sort of webbing. Coots aren't bald either. |

If you haven't come across Villager Jim and his wildlife, mainly bird, photos from the Peak District, then you are missing a treat. Even by his standards though, this photo of two Peregrines and some Starlings is amazing. facebook.com |

I went for a lovely walk to Keyhaven today, the tide was out and lots of birds were about. We couldn't believe the variety of ducks that were on the lagoon and lots of little turnstones were chatting and arguing at the water's edge as they went about their business.

Due to a chest cold I've not been out much but still enjoying the garden birds coming in every day. With the cold weather, I've been putting out more food and lots of seed on the ground. It's been very busy with the usual visitors but seeing lots of starlings as well. Cheers me up ![]() |
