In hindsight, perhaps the one I saw might have been similarly exhausted parent then. It didn't look fully adult colours though I'd be guessing now.

@paulcook , yes, likely to be a worn-out parent. This time of year when looking after their young, they really don't take of themselves at all. Let's hope they get a nice cruise to the Bahamas when the kids have left home. I was watching a very raggedy looking one going backwards and forwards to the nest box earlier.

Do blue tits have a second brood? Seems like they'd have plenty of time yet for round 2 of wearing themselves out. On the flipside, our swan parents look utterly serenely peaceful. Was speaking to someone who knows the park inside out, and he said the previous pen was 26 years old before she finally died in 2017. And there's barely a year where they're not 100% successful with their family. |

Shortly before nest site investigation time, I was having the leaky garage I’d inherited from previous house owners completely refurbed. I took a weather-worn nest box off the side of the garage and put it on the floor up against a decking balustrade, aiming to fix it at some point and put it back on the garage after the refurb. Despite the location next to my washing line and opposite the side access door for the garage, some blue tits are nesting in it!

A blackbird was on the fat ball feeder this morning which is a surprise to me as I’ve only ever seen the feeding off the ground, not even the bird table.

Magpies frequent our fat balls and take lots! Not seen a blackbird on the feeder yet, but I'll keep an eye out.
