Sounds like people were genuinely concerned for his safety. I hadn't quite realised he was running pretty much all of it on his own.

He never seemed to make any attempt to reach out beforehand to enlicit support. I don't think he thought he needed it. As I've said before I think he was more than a little naive. He'd looked at the average record pace (approx 2mph) and thought that's soft (it's notable in his video he pays no respect to the Paul, Steve or Joss's achievements). I'll trot round the winter one in 7 or 8 days as a warm-up (I've seen at least one post tonight from someone who seems to know him that suggests he still thinks he can finish by next Monday) and then come back in the summer and set a proper record. I suspect it never really crossed his mind that he needed pacers to move at that sort of speed. Nearly all the support he has received so far seems to be due to folk turning up off their own back, particularly today because they were concerned about him being out there on his own. This is not an unfamiliar story I've lost count of the number of similar tales I've come across relating to the BG over the years. A typical one was a mid-pack fell runner in a NW club who decided to do a BG for his 40th. He then looked up the record and announced at the next club run that it looked a bit soft (this was pre-Killian) and he was going to try and beat it. He couldn't understand the reaction he got!

lots of support for him when he lost contact with his dad and the mho last night too, if he carries on now I doubt there'll be as much solo as he was expecting.

I think so too RH. Even if he has struggled to meet his predictions he has proved himself to be very resilient and competent. As a result he has earned a deal of respect and support for that. As was shown yesterday I think there is also a genuine concern amongst the fell running community to ensure that he stays safe. We will have to see whether or not he continues and if so how long it takes? There doesn't seem to be any sign of life yet from either tracker. Even if from this point on he moves as fast as Paul did he will take 9 days and it remains to be seen whether his planning put in place the resources to potentially continue through a second week.

Seems to have had a few issues reconnecting with the van. At 10pm ish last night he posted the below and lots of folk in the Lakes got involved in trying to find the van. It was located safe and well near it's last tracked location. There is a suggestion their tracker had malfunctioned but it's not clear why they didn't get themselves where they could see his tracker given they weren't expecting to see him until 7pm? "Somethings not right. I have lost my dad in support vehicle I’ve not had any contact since 8am this morn when I left wasdale. I had to come off bowfell via band to the langdale valley due to extreme weather early this evening. There has been no pings on his support vehicle GPS since 1pm or activity on what’s app since 12:30, I’ve managed to check this with some find signal in the valley. he was due to meet me around 7pm at duddon road above stepping stones checkpoint but obviously I had to detour to langdales. it is strange for him not to try and find signal as he always makes sure he has it when I’m coming into a checkpoint and is constantly checking thruout day. Another friend of mine also went to that checkpoint where he should of been and where the gps last pinged his location and he was not there. I expected Him to check tracker and naturally come to langdales but not heard nothing. No one else can get in touch with him either . Not a clue what is going on . Please let me know If you know anything. Been stuck in langdales for 5-6hours now" No indications as today's plans? |

Ah! Just noticed Dom's tracker moved last night (by vehicle) and was last located near Three Shires Stone at just before midnight. Not sure what that means for today. I guess he was heading to the van but it also means he has to travel back to Stool End if he is to continue. It's interesting from his above post that he expected to be in the Duddon Valley at 7pm but when he came off Bowfell he was already looking at least 9pm if he moved as fast as Paul, realistically more like 11pm. This was despite having had a relatively good day in the conditions. He seems to still have expectations as to his speed of travel that are just not realsitic given his abilities in the prevailing conditions. |

I'm amused but baffled by the emerging saga. On the one hand, lots f admiration for his determination etc but he seems to be utterly clueless and incompetent in terms of understanding and equipping himself for the challenge. To a quite shocking degree.
