When I started my current job our warfarin clinic has about 90 patients. While our AF numbers have increased we now have 8 on warfarin. I switched everyone suitable to a DOAC at the start of Covid to minimise contacts for INR checks. Those remaining on warfarin typically have a mechanical heat valve which the new agents can't be used for.
There are a couple of newer agents in clinical trials, they appear to prevent clots without increasing bleed risk. It sounds impossible but is because of incredibly clever pharmacology (I'm a geek, most pharmacists are) and if they reach general use I expect warfarin will be consigned to the history books.

I’m far too old for your experience Heinzster 😢😢. My ablations were done in 2014 and 2015 and I’ve been medication free since then. I was first diagnosed in about 2006/7 and was on warfarin from about 2012-2014

My GP didn’t really know what to do with me and is going to write to Cardiology to ask their advice. Her gut feel is to manage the risk of stroke against the inconvenience of long term blood thinning medication and she doesn’t feel qualified to do that without reference to the specialists. Seems a pretty sensible thing to do, I thought.

I’m all stabilised and anti-coagulated now but I thought I’d ask a *ahem* running question.

Several sports watches are advertising their ability to monitor for AF (Apple Watch series 4 and up, Garmin venu 2 plus) for example - both pretty pricey buts of kit.

Has anyone:
got one?

Thought about it and decided against?

Still thinking about it?

My faithful old Garmin 235 won’t last much longer I suspect so I think I’ll take a look…

Yep - thanks GR - my old AW (series 5) is what picked mine up.

I eventually got referred to a cardiologist - a Swiss with the magnificent name of Reto Gamma. He’s a runner, which was really helpful.

I’m a Garmin guy at heart but Dr G would be much happier if I wore my AW all the time (I now have a 1st gen Ultra).

Does that help in any way at all?
