Flossie has no road sense and would run across the road if she saw a cat or fox. We live on a pretty busy road so it's *always* on-lead when we set off on our walks.

Marvin is 90% off the lead but even though he is very good I always put him on the lead by the main road in the village. Its just not worth the risk.

I thought it was a legal requirement to have dogs on lead on public highways (roads with traffic) but I seem to be mistaken. I think dogs just have to be 'under control'.

That said I would never have Jess off lead on a road/street however UN busy it seemed. Cats and foxes - and suddenly appearing fast moving toddlers are the main threats....

I hasten to aff that Jess is good with children ...but lots of kids have not been taught or are too young to know how to treat dogs. Beware the dreaded dabbing hand!

aff = add (obv)

Jess' walks are usually 75% off lead - we just have to walk to the countryside or beach via a few streets. She sometimes has on lead 'town' walks for variety and so she is used to busy public places like shopping centres, cafes, schools, busy high streets, heavily trafficked 'big' roads. There's always something to learn!

Another dog with absolutely no road sense here. In fact I've only just started letting him off lead when we're on bridle ways etc as I worried he'd run off and I'd not get him back. He actually walks beautifully off lead, keeping to within a few yards of me.

However he does explore a bit in the undergrowth which resulted in him getting scratched on his back by a bramble or similar last week. Not a bad scratch and no sign of any foreign bodies, but enough for him to be constantly "at it" resulting in a huge bald patch and him repeatedly drawing fresh blood. I've put the cone of shame back on - the one we got about 3weeks ago when he kept biting his paw - and I'm washing it daily with antibacterial wash, hoping it will clear up on its own without another £60+ visit to our friend the vet.

Hope Charlie is soon better Alice
I was told by our trainer that if you use an extendable lead early on with a puppy and while they are being trained for 'everything else' that they will work out that the end of the lead is about the kind of distance they should be from you even when off the lead on a walk. Obviously in parks/fields/woods not the road I mean. This has generally been the case with Wanda now, unless of course she sees a bird or a rabbit!

I agree totally with Sharkie, I also thought it was a legal requirement to be on a lead on the road.

That's interesting about the retractable lead. I've seen various things recommending against them for training. Our puppy class information says not to use them for class certainly. Class starts Sun.

I've always used a flexilead, maybe that's why he stays close. Interesting BBL! Not for class though, although we're not supposed to use a harness for class either but we do ;-)

Flexilead = retractable lead? We used a retractable with Jess for a while - but only in the countryside before she was allowed off lead. I used to take two leads out with me - and the retractable was a big heavy thing with a wide tape (the lead bit)

As a walker/runner/cyclist I have a pathological hatred of those string like retractables you can hardly SEE.
