Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Remind me how old he'll be when you get him Peds.

The cliff tops country park where we live has a huge, undulating field like area where people let their dogs of leash to run around, play and interact. We weren't sure Jess would be ok, but to be honest there wasn't much else we could do with her. We certainly couldn't do any serious training she was far too excited by all the new doggy playmates.

People are so nice. And so understanding - Jess got loads of compliments and instant acknowledgement that she was still just 'a baby German Shepherd' as one young woman put it. She hasn't had a good play with other dogs since the last puppy party so it was brilliant for her to meet and interact with such a wide variety of dogs of all ages.

Her hackles often go up at first sighting but as soon as she gets within sniffing distance she is all tail wag and friendly. This is a BIG phew. Some of the little terrier types think they are much bigger dogs than they really are.

Yes indeed terriers can really have Napoleon syndrome can't they! Flossie is really loving having her "cousin" (my sister's dog) Bella staying with us - she's here for 3 weeks, then goes home for a week, then they will be off skiing for a fortnight so Bella will return again! Flossie is not at all intimidated by having an adult dog around and just tries to get Bella to play all the time!

Sadly my hopes that the house -training would improve with an older dog setting an example have not yet been fulfilled. Onwards and upwards!

He'll be 18 months old Shark, we're hoping he'll be ok alone for a few hours or we'll be falling into the 'Siberian trap' and getting two lol.

Is there a specific Siberian reason for getting a puppy that old (in puppy terms obv.) - or did it just pan out that way? I assume he'll be house trained and have basic obedience stuff at the a year and a half?

Hmm, two Huskies. Do they come in a package with a sledge.

The short version of the story is we got our first Husky from the same breeder - she asked if we would let her have him back for shows and breeding - we said yes. He was a... well, here's a pic of him and his CV dreamcatcher.org.uk
He was very ill for a whole year and it effected us deeply, when he went we said no more (as you do).
So two years later and we get in touch with the breeder to ask about rehoming as she is also a rehomer/foster etc for Huskies. The breeder is now quite ill and is downsizing her pack. They had just given away two - two month old pups but had Gadget at eighteen months old. Like any puppies they shouldn't go to new homes until after two months (waits for correction if I'm wrong...?).

As for two dogs.... Watch this space lol, it will all unfold on the 16th.

Thanks so much for sharing Seiko's story Peds. He must have been a fantastic dog - and what a looker! Nice tribute to you and your missis too...

The 2 months rule is the one I know - some people argue that eight is a 'fear' week and seven weeks is possible. But a responsible breeder will make sure the puppy is being socialized properly so 8 seems right to me. Anything shorter than 7 is verging on cruel I think.

Do keep us posted.

What a fab dog your Husky was Peds!

We got Flossie at 8 weeks, but our two previous Labs, who both came from the same, different breeder (if you see what I mean) were nearly 12 weeks when we were allowed to bring them home - that breeder said that she felt 8 weeks was too young. Having said that, every breeder we looked at this year, before getting Flossie, was talking about "ready from 8 weeks."

Just read 'the psychology of dogs' and there is a really interesting chapter on puppies and when they should leave mothers, socialising etc. Between eight and twelve weeks were the optimum times for developing positive characteristics. On that basis, I would wait a bit longer - unless there are dogs in the household already. Not relevant to me really - rescues all the way for us!
