Oh gosh, poor chap.
I don't think I'll ever quite understand the determination to keep going that long after throwing up and collapsing, though. But then I'll also never be out at the front of the pack in the first place, and I'm sure there's a connection there.

Rae, probably the other way round in most races, certainly Ironman. Many pros will step off the course if their day is going wrong and they are out of the places that pay, even some of the top amateurs once the podium/KQ is gone.
Further back in the field there is an absolute determination to finish, and those battling the cut off grim reaper can have a hellish time and still keep trucking. They are also out there much longer so the suffering can be hours.

Speaking partly from experience, if you're hanging on for grim death at the back then it's probably going no worse than you expected, so you might as well finish what you started.

My line of thinking is more that if anything gets to point of extreme (or beyond moderate, really) discomfort and stopping is an option, I will almost certainly stop, and this probably gets in the way of achieving most things relating to physical fitness (and we've established that tri is just competitive fitness).
Upto and including moderate discomfort though, I'm good. Hence tattooes, piercings, living with Sam...

Probably as good a point as any to say I’m not going tennis tonight. Haven’t played since Thursday and my elbow is still giving me considerable grief.

Lull those fluffy yellow bastards into a sense of false security, then they'll feel it all the more when you get back to tatting them.
