@LBAC Si nice to be able to take the lead so early and still win even if not feeling great. Nice work @larkim |

Thanks SPR. Was a nice meeting. Properly officiated but very low key so free to our club members or £2.50 to others. Specifically set out to be seeded with an expectation that the slower heats would be for people who rarely or never run on a track or would consider themselves far too slow for most open meetings (rightly or wrongly), e.g. my wife running 14+ for the 3000m or the milers doing 8min+. That said, one young runner travelled from Essex to Cheshire for the meeting as there was a 1000m which she aimed to beat the po10 all time 1000m record for u13g, which she did becoming the first girl under 3min for the distance. |

Good stuff, @larkim! My first official 1 mile race was a few years ago and I ran a very pleasing 5:17, which I knew would have put me first in the country in my age group at that point in the year. As I gloated at the end, a race official called me over and told me that I had been spotted at one point with my foot on the white line on the inside of the track (something I didn't know was forbidden), and I was therefore disqualified! I was gutted! It seemed very harsh to me at the time, but I suppose rules is rules.

Oof, that's harsh @J2R !! I mean, fair to consider that we should apply the rules, but I don't think I've ever been at a track event where there would be sufficient diligence to spot that sort of infraction. That said, at last night's meeting one of my clubmates got a dq for breaking too early on the 800m. As it happens I was in the same race, actually breaking the rules myself by firstly not running a true effort race and secondly by pacing and encouraging my son in the race (a young man with downs syndrome) to help him achieve a PB in the 800m so as I saw the flag go up as we passed the cones my initial fear was that my son had broken early and I'd not seen it because he was behind me. The officials used Roster to record the results so they did add the dq'd athletes time to the notes so he can at least keep a record of the time he ran. |

If you break too early, you don't run the correct distance and there can't be any quibbles/ leniency with that. Stepping on the inner line is similar although I don't know whether the rules allow a warning for say just one step but I expect there's a track judge in place to watch for that. I certainly noticed the judges in place when I was doing my first indoor race ever this year as I had to fight to not get thrown to the inside on the bends. I believe tracks with no curbs at all are actually measured closer to the inside due to people being able to run closer to the inside. For bends there's usually cones that make it hard to run on the line without stepping on them.

I agree SPR, I didn't see the infraction so don't know if he just skipped the wrong side of the cone or just naively dived straight for the curb from the gun. It's a clear dq and I would always expect it to be enforced, just was nice to see the time recorded anyway as for a runner at 2m52 pace he will at least be able to keep that in mind for next time when he gets the bend right!

I have done an 800 where it started like 1500 once (so curved start line and cut in immediately). Regarding the time, if the runner cut straight in, then the time isn't representative but if that was a discretion thing (rather than for any infraction no matter how egregious) then it suggests they didn't. I have seen a runner cut straight in at track league though, it was funny as they were leading Vs sub 2 runners at 200. I think that's the only time I've seen an infraction in the 800 though (I presume it was someone doing multiple events that wasn't used to the 800) |

So having checked PO10, it was the runner's first ever 800 race (was in 2021) but they weren't doing anything else. They'd done a couple of 1500 two years prior to that but nothing else on track, profile mainly shows XC and parkrun. They ran 2:01 later that year and did run sub two the next year.

I'm hoping to get my mile down to closer to my 15 PB next Saturday. Should definitely be sub 4:50 and probably closer to 4:45. A bit of a spanner is I have a minor left hamstring strain currently from my session on Tuesday. Hasn't affected training off track currently and did 11.5 miles yesterday with 8 x 1000 (HM pace + 5-20 secs when on the flat), 800 rec with no issues but track speed is a different ball game so will have to see how the week progresses. |
