FB seems to be the best place to keep up with Midlands info. Might be something on it there. As for your 10000m dilemma J2R, the gap you have is around the same as you get in the Olympics/ WC between the 10000m final and the heats in the 5000. Depends on your recovery and obviously the best runners don't have to run at their fastest in the heats (and do a lot of miles so are better conditioned to recover from the effort). |

SPR, yes, I know it should be possible. But the midweek 5K really is a key race, probably my best chance of getting a PB this year (fast local course), and I ask myself would I feature a raced 10K 3 days before this as part of my optimal training plan, and I have to say no. It's a shame it's not the other way round. I'd be happy to do the 10,000m as a B race. (As it happens, I've got another 5K on the Friday two days after the key race, booked long ago, which I'm now going to treat as a fun run).

J2R - Fair enough, yes no point risking the main race.

Ah, don't be a wimp! I got within 1m20 of my 5k track PB the day after finishing 6th in a 33mile trail race ![]() Makes a nice change anyway to have a surplus of races and being able to choose A, B and fun-runs compared to the last 12 months. Good luck with the PB J2R! |

Tempted to see how I race (3000m) 2 days after a track session next weekend. Wouldn't expect to be at my best and potentially throwing away a PB opportunity but early season feels like a good time to see how I cope and whether I can do the odd race without optimal prep. Don't push the pace in the session and see how I recover. For the 800m on Wednesday, I did my normal hill sprints (6 x 10 secs) two day out and then a short run the day before but I did an easy 10 miler on Sunday which I wouldn't normally do and was fine the next day. Usually I'd be running half that three days out. For the 1500 first race I did 200m flat sprints three days out. Legs still felt those two days out which was an easy run day, I then did easy flat sprints the day before. Given it was the first race whether there was an effect but I think I like to sprint full effort rather than easy but didn't want to risk soreness without the day to recover in-between (I'm usually fine and I'm adapted as I've been doing weekly hill sprints before we returned to track. but was cautious as never done them the day before). For both race days, as they were late, I did a mile loosener in the morning which I've not done before. The 3000m is an earlier start so unlikely to do that there. I may try and do hill sprints properly a day out at some point and see how that works. |

SPR, interested in your 6 x 10 secs hill sprints. What do these do for you, do you reckon? And what pace do you do them at, and up what gradient? I'm thinking of splashing out on a pair of spikes, as I feel with track races coming up over the next few months I ought to take things a little more seriously. Hitherto I've just run in very minimal shoes, in a few cases a pair of old, worn down trail shoes (New Balance MT 110) which are very light and grip well on the track surface. I'm thinking proper spikes might buy me another second per lap, though. |

Priming the legs. Gets the feeling reactive and ready to fast. This a good article on the topic of muscle tension. scienceofrunning.com They're sprints so they are sprinted, there isn't a pace aim. Gradient is moderate I guess. I did some sprints yesterday and they measured 0.04 of and Yesterday's sprints were after 11.7 miles. If I want to do hill sprints it will likely be after long runs now given track sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. It's noticeable that my legs don't feel as flat today as they normally feel after a long run even though there's some fatigue. Some of that might be just I'm more conditioned for runs of that length (that's why I can do sprints after of course) but even just doing one sprint after the run it was noticeable that my legs felt different straight away, as before that first sprint I wasn't sure how my legs would respond, but after the first one I was sure I'd be fine as legs responded well and felt more springy immediately. |

*0.04 miles. Some other typos in the message but hopefully you get the drift. Also not saying everyone should do what I do. You need to work out what works for you given muscle tension/ feeling primed is an individual thing. |

Suddenly I have a wealth of track and field events a distinct possibility. My seaside club would like me to do (wait for it) 100m, TJ, HJ, 4X100 and shot for the 60s age group in a week or two.... Crikey! It would be just like the old (overdoing it) days. SPR will know what I mean. |

So LJ attempt, run over to do the 100m, then back for some more LJ?
