Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I think there was a travel restriction initially actually so maybe that's why.

4:33.34 for 1500m today. Not happy with the time but it's the first race for 6 months so I'll treat it like the 2:20 800 as the first race up last year.

What I do need to think about is race craft. I should have gone with the front pack but I let a gap open and then with the wind I wasn't able to close it and was stuck in no man's land. I'm thinking that going forward, I should just do what's needed to be in the pack to 300m if I'm capable of running that fast and then assess from there.

It's really not bad, SPR! Especially for a first race back - and the wind would have bitten if it's anything like here. It's still only April. What would you have been happy with - 4:30 or under?

Projected strategy sounds sound. Even if you wind it up (although I imagine that's quite hard over 1500) I'd agree you need to be with the pack at 3-400m.

Sounds like a good start to the season, SPR. Interesting, your observation about trade craft. I could so much more in this area. I'm normally so focused on times that I don't really consider the other runners, but I know if I could try to hold on to another runner or runners (and they hold on to me), everyone could probably end up with a slightly better time.

Sharkie/ J2R - re race craft, speed is always high for the first 50-100, it's just that I settle fairly early and might need to be more flexible with that. As the first portion speed is high, it wouldn't be a case of speeding up just slowing down less/ maintaining until 300. In terms of your point J2R, you'd trust yourself after the first 300 but there's good physiological reasons why a slightly too fast first 300-400 wouldn't be too costly, continuing to 800 might be a different story though. Today a couple of secs faster would have had me on the lead pack, that said there is a balance as I passed one guy that tried to hold on at 350.

Sharkie - You're 100% correct. I guess I'm just used to being able to turn up at a track race and being close to my PB if my condition is good but it's been a different year and I have last year's 800m as proof that first race isn't necessarily an indicator of what you can race given I went from my slowest in 4 years to a PB within two weeks.

My next officially booked 1500 isn't till July now (there will hopefully be a UoB and league opportunity in June). I turned down a UoB 1500 place (21 Apr) on Friday as I thought 800 made more sense. Luckily they also had a space in the 800 so I'm in that and it also stops me chasing the 1500 performance which I'd have been likely to do after today.

First session back with my London jumps group at Lee Valley this morning. Lost some confidence in hitting the board - but it will be back. It's been a while since I jumped.

Sounds good Sharkie. Lockdown would have been a lot harder for field eventers.

4 x 600m with 5 mins recovery (600m jog) today. 1:41.3 (legs were like what are you doing), 1:39.3, 1:39.9 (legs protesting a bit in the last 100), 1:41.3 (felt like 3 but slower). Would expect all sub 1:40 with fresh legs so that's ok for two days after a race and legs should get stronger for it.

3 x 150 after, should have been 4 but legs protested a bit on first one so took the second off as the recoveries weren't that long.

The club session last night was 10 x 300m. Er..... Nope! I did 5 x 1k off reducing recoveries on my own. 3k of volume is Not Enough. 5k is low for a marathon runner.

Could have done the 300s then added longer reps after?

Looks like MK5000 is going to happen in July so I might be looking to change my UoB 5000 in May to a 1500 instead if I can.
