Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Bath uses 80l of water.

Which is quite a lot of gas.

I’ve pondered this but I doubt we use much hot water in the summer. Showers of course and a bit of clothes/dish washing but we chose to get the hot tank taken out and switch to a combi which gives instant heat when we want it.

My shower runs off the boiler, so that adds up. (And I don't want to change that for the moment).

You could put in a smaller hot water cylinder if you use less. And it will keep water hot for quite some time.

And it *will* heat hot water in the winter too. Solar power does go from 100 in the summer to 0 in the winter. There's lots of useful output then too.

Worst case scenario is I charge my battery up at the cheap rate overnight and then use the solar to heat hot water during the day.

Also massively reduces my CO2 emissions.

Yeah I know and it’s something we keep in mind. However we are short on suitable space for solar (meaning less cost efficient) and, well, we haven’t managed to get round to it yet as it will require a new garage roof and planning permission in our location. Even getting a quote for the roof alone has been impossible so far, it may have to be a DIY job.

EP, frustratingly of the two quotes I had, which after some haggling were almost identical, the one I didn't go for had stock already in warehouse (pre-ordered, which they made quite a big deal of). The one I have gone for said install in 6-8 weeks, which would have been August. A couple weeks after ordering and paying deposit, it's not going to be October. "Problems with supply of components." Right, but I asked you about that and you said it was all ok. So that was a lie then? Been offered a discount equivalent to the 2 months lost electricity value! Just under 300 quid! As I can't make them magic up the parts, that's what I'm going to have to take! :-) G

I lived in a cottage last year with no mains gas and used an under sink water heater for shower. It did the job fine but you probably couldn’t have multiple showers or a bath off it

My hot water cilinder is permanently set to sink. I never need the bath, i.e. full setting and it heats up on a timer, once a day, for 2 hours. I have never run out of hot water, not even with guests staying!
Fozzy, yes, I have been asked why I intend to cover both sides of the roof of my Herb Building. Well, it is only £1000 more apparently for double the capacity. Worth it, especially in winter!

The ASHP that I have installed is supposed to be 300% more efficient than a gas boiler for heating water.

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
