I'm pleased to see that the writer of that piece is named Isambard. You don't come across many Isambards.

There’s a bloke called Portugal too I think. There’s a link to a piece that talks about getting to Lake Bled by train from the UK. If anyone needs me I’ll be down a rabbit hole. I’ll stick the link on Diogenes’ travel wire |

That’s a fascinating article, GregP. Any room in that rabbit hole? Coincidentally, we’ve been playing a lot of Ticket To Ride Europe over the holidays (a family Christmas present) and on that there is a direct route from Lisbon to Madrid ![]() |

Oooh. I’m going to Lille next month - it holds a fascination for me as the shortest journey I think I can do. March is Brussels if Sue comes. probably Biarritz if she doesn’t. |

Madrid to Lisbon by rail — a tale of two cities and three trains thetimes.co.uk The journey is a nightmare - Portugal (and Spain’s domestic low speed railways) run on the Iberian Gauge tracks. The long mooted high speed link between the capitals was to be “standard gauge” to tie in with the rest of the European high speed network. We heard recently that RENFE is planning to ask the Portuguese authorities for permission to run trains into portugal using a very complicated dual gauge bogey - I’m not holding my breath! |

Oh heck. That sounds like an infrastructure nightmare.
