Hi! So you've sorted your long run this weekend Happy, but don't forget the 12 x 400 and 6 mile tempo later in the week!

Lol! Furman/FIRST cancelled for the coming week Luna. I *don't think* they recommend any over-distance LSRs! It's hardly "RUN LESS"! I'm going to enjoy my "RUN LESS" next week though - maybe I'll reach infinite speed as my running approaches zero?! :-)G

The 'junk miles' post was about the nub of it for me. My 2009 marathon I did a long run a week like a good person, a tempo or speed thing with the club, and 4-5 'nothing' runs of 2-4 miles at plod pace resenting every step as I'd rather have been cycling or swimming. Had a rubbish marathon and totally lost my running mojo.
This year I did the three-a-week, had plenty of time to swim/bike/play with my willy (delete if inappropriate), ran better and came out of the back of the marathon still enjoying my running.
Works for me.

"2. There are some who are advised or forced to reduce running from 6/7 days a week to only 3 or 4. This may be wrong, but it's medical advice (hospital consultant and hospital physio) for some and they want to follow it. Furman gives a way to structure the 30-40 hours a month that one spends into less running, with maximum performance effect, with non-running providing the base for aerobic, strengthening and other physical training benefits."
There are some other schedules in the book for HM and 5k racing and i have yet to find a decent plan for either of these distances so will be trying furman.
i have reread the book over the past week and realised that there is much more than just the 3 plus 2 as there is a broader approach to include 2 sessions/week of strength and flexibility training. Whilst i am recovering from injury i am learning to include these sessions each week and will continue with this so I see this as a 3 runs plus 2 xtrain plus 2 strength/flexibility - a lot of other programs do not seem to give these the same explicit prominence.
i still want to prove that this can work over the longer mara distance albeit that overall on the sub 3.15 thread as an example as it seems here there remains a huge amount of scepticism amongst seasoned mara experts. it will not prevent me from having another go once i get well again.
