Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Any thoughts on compostable/biodegradable bin liners?

As the other half to Capt’n Malc I’ll add making yogurt to our list (above)

There was an article in yesterday’s Guardian about re-using plastic waste in roads. Apparently it helps prevent pothole formation. The plastic is not made hot enough to decompose and release toxic fumes. Perhaps there’s a hitch somewhere (collecting the material would need a big improvement) but it sounds like a great way to get rid of the plastic waste mountain - and I do hate potholes. Not really one for this thread, I suppose.

Getting men involved...

Last week before I went on holiday, SilverShadow and I were looking at silicone mug covers - they're flat so fit a variety of cup sizes. They come in packs of six typically, and the ones we looked at had lovely butterflies on top (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/CREATESTAR-Silicone-Cup-Lids-Butterfly/dp/B019IHF22Q/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1531385192&sr=8-14&keywords=silicone+cup+lid). However, as we only drink one hot drink at a time, we were looking to share out the remaining lids. Binks and NightJar both expressed an interest... except they wanted something "more manly". And here's the challenge... almost all the lids are "womanly", not "manly"... butterflies, flowers, kittens, fruit etc. Is this part of the problem that men aren't interested because there isn't a lid with a football or similar on it?

Business opportunity for someone there? Though you don't have to look far on Amazon to find a variety of plain silicone cup lids.

The psychology of feeling the need to be entertained or defined by the design of our plastic-dodging accessories. There must be scope for a PhD there ;)

If only we knew someone with a degree in product design whose dissertation was entitled “Gender identity today and its impact on the way designers are designing products”

@CK2 - This is what am doing:

Meat food waste (if there is any from my housemates) is wrapped in newspaper and put into the council provided food waste bin. All other food waste is composted.

Recyclables - not allowed to use plastic bags in my area. Goes straight in to blue bin

General waste - it is a small bin that a bread bag can line. As the waste is generally packaging - reuse the throw away packaging to line the bin. Seems to take about a week to fill sometimes less.

Like your beer/soda? Perhaps can request the company to change to a compostable 6 pack ring. 2016 - Saltwater Brewery created a fully compostable 6 pack ring. e6pr are now producing this for any 6 pack ring sets of beverages: e6pr.com

Someone once asked what could be done with the plastic that is here. Some initiatives with plastic bags to create PLARN: Ness has a friend who is reusing bread bags to make stuff such as reusable bags: instagram.com

In the USA a charity creates blankets out of plarn:https://www.1millionwomen.com.au/blog/diy-crochet-plastic-bags-sleeping-mats-homeless/
