Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I think I've maybe got to the bottom of it. Or at least, got my hand in far enough that I can feel something with legs :-)

When you type a nickname, each key press was recording your combo of letters e.g.

f
fe
fet
fetch
fetche
fetchev

and sending them to the server to find matches.

The server logs tell me that there are some circumstances where the same request (with the same combo of letters) is sent to the server more than once e.g. fet, fet, fet almost instantaneously.

When that's NOT a unique combination of letters, no harm is done. The user is left looking at the list of names that matches that combo.

But when it IS a unique combo of letters, the server responds with one user ID, and the special square bracket code is inserted at the cursor. So because the request is duplicated, so the special square bracket code is duplicated.

To get around this, I've added a little delay. Now, the request to the server does not happen until there have been no keypresses for at least half a second. So if you bash out 'f-e-t' in quick succession, it only generates one request to the server, half a second after you type the 't'.

In theory, this should stop duplicate requests happening, and cure this problem :-)

I've a bug report that I need help with. I am unable to replicate it, so I'm wondering whether you folks are seeing it too.

0) Go to your training log: fetcheveryone.com/training.php
1) Go to the map, and it shows all your runs, rides, swims and walks.
2) Press the 'Filter' button, and choose 'walks' (or any top-level category)
3) The page reloads, just showing the lines for that category.
4) Amend the date using the date boxes to a specific date range.
5) The appropriate lines show up.

The above is what I'd expect to happen. The bug report says that the filtering does not seem to be working.

Oh hang on, the penny has dropped I think. The user is talking about tags, rather than categories. Save your efforts (but do give this thread a follow if you're willing to help in future).

Got something to say?
