Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

As someone who works for the NHS I don't mind private healthcare as it takes some of the pressure of us and we can make money off it which we can then put back in to NHS services. (We have a private wing attached to the hospital). What does terrify me is the taking over of NHS work- clinics, community services, health visiting by private companies which is a separate issue.

63 new messages on this thread today..... must be something contentious from HQ!

If you don't compromise your ethics is there any way to turn up for parkrun, or any other running event, in suitable footwear? Short of making your own from ethically sourced, plant based materials.

well we have our eggmail:

"As the parkrun community grows (now more than five million people globally) there will inevitably be those who challenge elements of what we do. We will continue to listen and engage and strive to keep the conversation positive. It is absolutely fine to disagree with this or any other decision we take.

We simply ask that everyone respects each other’s point of view and the choices they make."

Our partnership with Happy Eggs

Dear Ambassadors and Event Teams,

You will probably by now have seen yesterday’s announcement of our new partnership with the happy egg co (Happy Eggs), the UK’s leading provider of free range eggs. Whilst many people have welcomed this addition to the parkrun family, a number of others have expressed their disappointment. As such, I would like to provide you all with some more background as to why we chose to partner with Happy Eggs, and reassure you that, despite concerns that have been voiced, the overwhelming majority of the parkrun community, and of the UK population in general, choose to eat eggs.

Before partnering with Happy Eggs we ran extensive consumer research and found that a third of parkrunners were already purchasing Happy Eggs and more than 50% told us they would consider buying them in the future. For the majority of parkrunners, Happy Eggs are a relevant product. Also, by partnering with Happy Eggs we are confident we are working with the UK’s leading free range egg manufacturer, with all Happy Egg farms exceeding standards set by the RSPCA farm assurance scheme Freedom Foods.

Importantly, it is evident that there are currently a number of activists, that are not from the parkrun community, who are using this story as a platform to further their agenda. It is critical therefore that we take the views of our own community seriously, whilst retaining some perspective about where the majority of criticism is originating.

There is a view, amongst some, that a partnership with a free-range egg company somehow dismisses their right to be both vegan and a parkrunner -- but this is not the case. We support the right of all parkrunners to make whatever personal lifestyle choices they feel appropriate.

Our ongoing objective is to support communities in helping people become healthier and happier. We also recognise this cannot be achieved only by parkrun on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Sleep, diet, stress and a whole host of other factors contribute to good health and wellbeing. And when it comes to food, we take the view that healthy nutrition should be based around unprocessed, real food. For some, this will come from a diet that includes animal products, for others it won’t. We understand that, and support it.

We are certainly not attempting to use the parkrun platform or the relationship with Happy Eggs to persuade anyone who doesn’t consume animal products to eat eggs, however, for those who choose to consume animal products, eggs are an excellent source of protein and vitamin D. Further, in the UK we consume more than 12 billion eggs every year. With 47% of these eggs NOT being free range, a major objective of our partnership is to encourage more egg consumers to choose free range.

Finally, whilst we are a lean and efficient organisation with minimal staff, we do have increasing costs as we deliver more than 42,000 UK events every year. As we grow, it is important that we find ways of generating income to sustain what we have built. But not at the expense of that cherished parkrun experience. We’re proud of the fact that, to a large extent, parkrun has remained unchanged over the past 14 years: it is still a simple, free, fun, social, timed run or walk in the park, with your mates.

To support existing events and future growth we rely on commercial partnerships such as this -- the companies that choose to support us help ensure the future of parkrun. However, I would like to highlight that we have a strong ethical code that governs who we would and would not partner with, which aligns to our vision of a healthier, happier planet. Decisions such as this are not taken in isolation, but are considered, discussed and decided upon, all the way up to Board level. Importantly, over 90% of approaches we receive from potential partners do not make it through this ethical code, despite often representing significantly greater levels of financial investment.

As the parkrun community grows (now more than five million people globally) there will inevitably be those who challenge elements of what we do. We will continue to listen and engage and strive to keep the conversation positive. It is absolutely fine to disagree with this or any other decision we take.

We simply ask that everyone respects each other’s point of view and the choices they make.

I received that email at 9.18pm. They might have been better getting their retaliation in first.
