Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Disappointing when a problem is known about well in advance and no-one bothers to put out a message though, which I've encountered once. If there's a "latest news" page it ought to either have latest news on or else a note saying this page isn't up to date and a pointer to wherever (eg facebook/twitter) for actual latest news. Incorrect/misleading info is worse than no info.

Any parkrun which I might attend uses Facebook to advise of cancellations, not sure if they use anything else and I would think that all regular attendees would check that. It does mean having to check several pages but it is hardly that time consuming. That's if your FB feed hasn't filled up with cancellation notices already.

(Yes, not everyone is on FB. But you can see the public posts without being signed in. And if you are not on line at all ... you couldn't see another channel anyway.)j

Well yeah, possibly. But there isn't any hint that there is a facebook site on their official parkrun site which has everything else on it - including, as I said, a "latest news" page! Which does include planned cancellations currently. Maybe it was a one-off. Anyway, like someone said, I can have a refund :-)

At Pomphrey the cancellation process is that the RD on duty makes the call and messages the RD group on FB messenger. Someone will then post to Facebook and someone will cancel on webFMS. They will also send out a "volunteer appeal" email advising of cancellation.

I think that lack of consistency between each parkrun is the issue. For very good reasons I'm sure, its largely up to the ED to determine what they feel most comfortable with as being their main route of communication. But it does mean unless you're a "regular" you have a few options to consider.

Facebook does seem to be the most common "quick and easy" communication method, but as the facebook accounts are typically not included on the "www.parkrun.org.uk/[event_name]" landing page its not always obvious for the non-facebook users to follow that route.

I'm sure parkrun HQ provide some guidance on this, but the "local" flavour that parkrun likes to maintain would I'm sure mitigate against having a centrally directed mandate.

Interestingly in their wiki, the guidance says that notification on the events page is the priority:-
Cancelling on the day of the event
Cancellations can happen right up to the scheduled start time of the event (and in fact can be abandoned during the event) if the event cannot continue safely.

If the decision to cancel is made on the day these additional actions also apply:
Announce the cancellation at the normal meeting point, giving the reasons.
Place an item on your event's news page explaining why the event has been/was cancelled at such short notice.

I'm clearly missing something -- where is this "latest news" page people mention?

It's the one you get when you click "news" on the parkrun run page microsite - e.g. parkrun.org.uk for my home run.

Linked from menu on each events, nd urgent use can appear on homepage. I think many event teamz have forgotten where it is as well ;-)

Its the news tab on the individual parkrun page. A lot of parkruns don't seem to use it much though.

Cancellation will appear in red automatically at the top after being done on webFMS
