Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Good points becca7. I recall a conversation 8 years ago along the lines of PSH saying that he couldn't understand why about 80 people would want to run around a particular park ( he wasn't to keen on the location ) and now there are between 500 and 700 each week. Several new events have started in the locality - none taking any numbers away but each now has a huge turnout themselves. Routes have been revised to accommodate but the parent event had to delay the start recently and ask runners to move cars that were blocking emergency access areas in the car park. There are a few new venues being assessed but, I doubt that they will reduce the numbers at the parent event significantly. Adding additional runs at the same venue/different time will only add to the local problem.
Gobi - our local parkrun now attracts about 350 regularly - but that can increase to 500 if a local club has a GP event there. The limit set by the council for a paid for event in the same park is 400 ( on basis that probably only 350 will start ).

Maybe there will come a time when we have to book our place on the website the day before, and once a certain number of barcodes are active for that date, no one else can register. Then anyone turning up who hasn't registered wouldn't t get a time as their barcode won't work. It's the only way I can see to cap numbers for individual events.

The obvious way to suppress demand is for there to be some form of opt-in, Opting in online beforehand with a token charge - 25p per run? With run credit being earned by volunteering perhaps. As each parkrun has their own unique identifier it could surely be designed in.

But if you didn’t opt in and chose to turn up and run anyway, would not getting a time matter? Given the hoops you need to jump through to obtain a t shirt, and the fact you can just buy one anyway, the incentive of getting an official time to “earn” a t shirt is arguably no longer so strong.

Just as a hypothesis...

Nominal charge - 50p or £1

Offer Free run incentives for volunteering... milestone runs could be free. etc.

Obviously don't want to have volunteers handle cash - so... maybe could put the results behind a paywall? So you appear as Unknown (or maybe Unclaimed) and clicking a link and paying your money claims the run and your name appears and the site shows you your time. You could obviously subscribe and automate this.

It's not in the spirit of parkrun as we know it, but would reduce numbers...
