Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Alness sounds like a brilliant parkrun.

I have been sat here reading all your comments about walking and running. I have been thinking back over all the parkruns I have done and some of the happy memories they have given me. That includes meeting Goni and RachE when they were setting up Eastleigh Parkrun

Eastleigh was my first parkrun, in Feb '12. Round the rugby pitches.

I loved it, although it took a train journey and a bike ride to get there. And it was bloody freezing! Running on the frosty grass and completing my first ever 5k (although I'd ran a marathon the previous year!) was really inspiring.

parkrun has been a big part of my life ever since, so thanks guys for setting it up! :-)

Eastleigh parkrun isn't Eastleigh parkrun unless you've had to stop for a train #oldschool

I got stopped by the train when I was there. Was very amusing.

The original Workington course, which wasn't in a park, was prone to being interrupted to let fire engines come out of the station.

The new course also isn't in a park but doesn't trouble the emergency services.

Nothing like train trouble at Eastleigh - those were the days.

Reading everything i have concluded I am without a doubt the minority and it is probably natural evolution that i attend less and less in any capacity.

I have stood in the cold and rain while somebody walks round and I'm sorry but i am totally against walking and tail walkers.

I joined an event for runners which it no longer is.

That said you are a good lot and I have enjoyed the fact this has all been spoken about with no

malice or overly defensive attitudes.

Very often at our local parkrun the tail walker is accompanying a man in his 80s who has done far more parkruns than I will ever achieve and who clearly was once a very good runner but now despite his best effort is shuffling round slower than some who walk (although I would not dare to suggest that he is not running.) He is amazing and an inspiration. He also volunteers. He is an out and out parkrun good guy.

I also admire all the volunteers who stand out in the cold and rain until he and those who are walking or run/walking are finished, because I have to say that I am unlikely to do that. I'm a bit of a 'fair weather/indoors job' volunteer and maybe that's the wrong approach but I hope my local parkrun would rather I sometimes turned up to volunteer for a more comfortable role than never volunteered at all.

I like the piece in this week's Hanley report from Adri, 'from pace to participation': parkrun.org.uk

Baroness - I don't think any of us old timers have any issue with the 80 year old trying his utmost - whatever oave that is. As Gobi says what we don't agree with is the move to an emphasis that walking is OK& a move away from a running event.

I really don't understand why parkrun HQ thinks anyone is put off by thinking it's a running event. As an example, I wouldn't be out off playing another sport if I thought others were better than me at it so why would people be put of running for that reason. If you want to walk there are plenty of walking groups already in existence.
