The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free.
But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient.
Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead.
Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?
I used to buy Sounds (circa 1980 onwards), they used to position the head shot on the front cover so it blocked the letters 'u' and 'n', so it was often entitled "Sods".
Very possibly, Sharkie, though I don't remember it specifically.
I also remember when, about 13, I changed my weekly magazine subscription at the Newsagent from Shoot! to the NME. I suppose they still do that, put aside things for customers to come and collect?
Disco 45, V'rap? My dad used to get it for me in John Menzies in big town (our wee Birrell's would not have room to stock it). Later I would buy Record Mirror, occasionally Superpop!, then moved largely onto Sounds for the metal years. Would still buy the odd RM and Malady Malawker, but not the NME because I though that, frankly, the writers were largely a bunch of arseholes (ooh, controversial!).
I probably bought The Face twice and i-D once - I found them a bit ... self-regarding.
I loved ver Hits though. I think I bought the first one, maybe second, with XTC flexidisc? and a glowing review of Young Marble Giants. For a period, early-mid 80s, it had the sharpest, and absolutely the funniest, writing on music and the music scene anywhere.
(Disclosure: I probably bought the first Q as well, and quite a few afterwards. The odd Select, and later Uncut, usually for the CD.)
