Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

It is like a lot of running stuff it can work both ways....depends on how disciplined you are ubder race conditions. 20 milers people are quite spaced so I found it ok.

Actually it was my best run over HM distance...

AL - I think it depends whether you want to do a 20 miler at that stage in your preparations, and how you'll approach it. I know people who have used these tune up races well; such as running 12/15 miles comfortably and then the last bit at around marathon effort. I've also known people who've been caught up in the race and they think it's affected the rest of their pre-marathon training and eventual race.
If you want to race something I'd suggest looking for a half.

If it's just to get in the 20 miler you might find a similarly paced friend to run it with, or join a race but only run a proportion of it hard?

I think as it's the first 20 miler in my plan I will be better off running locally. I can see the merits of using a race for more experienced marathoners. I'm pretty sure Mr AL will come with me :)

Whereas I think that a 20 mile race makes it much easier to do the long run as long as you can be disciplined about pace. No worrying about route, getting help if something goes wrong, water etc. and nice to have the company - after all you should be running it at chatting pace.

Only you know how disciplined you can be on race day. I'm normally a nightmare when I put a number on but have always managed to run Ashby 20 as a training run as London is the bigger picture.

I've got a 20 mile event in my bid up to my debut in Chester this October. I'm going to use it as race day simulation of pre race food etc, then so hopefully 5 at an easy pace and the remainder at target marathon race pace when I can test out taking gels over a long period etc. But I've run about 10 20 mile runs this year so that part of the distance isn't too daunting. I will need to be careful about not racing it.

Mr AL is keen to do the race (as a training run) - I hadn't realised it's in Lancaster (his home town) - so we can stay with the inlaws - so it will be very pretty.
