Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I will defo be back (UTMB) maybe not next year as I want to lose some weight before I give it another crack ....... we'll see ;-)

I use the Salmon 12 ltr vest, older versions weren't great for front pockets but the more recent versions have some pockets below the bottle pockets , just big enough for small packets of food, defo everything will get squashed so best not to think about what food looks like when eating it , hence I've heard tales of some people taking custard etc in condoms to eat !! - not for me that one ;-)

If I'm doing a longer event like spine etc I use Ultimate direction fastpack 25lt but with the addition of a chest pocket strapped to it which then acts as a snack bag , like you say food in front of you easy to access same as drink ...... always in front of me.

They say that no question is a stupid question, so here goes.

How do you carry round your Tailwind to dispense it on a long run?

At my last event I wrapped up the pre-weighed powder into little freezer bags but when I tried to get it into my soft flasks at a checkpoint it was decidedly tricky.

I tend to start with around 4 pre-prepared soft flasks (they weight so little without fluid and take up little space) which will get me through something like 8-10 hours depending on the temperature. Then I use the individual sticks of Tailwind that you can get. If you tear a corner off the top with a little care you can then pour the powder into a softflask. One stick does two flasks (i.e. a litre) for me. If there are drop bags I also put additional pre-prepared flasks in those.

I have active root and I made it up into little packages to put in my bottle as I needed them but it is a wider neck bottle so it was fine. The multiple soft bottles is a good idea though might steal that with pride. What bottles do you use? I got one from decathlon but it kept leaking.

Gromit I admire you I couldn’t ever consider anything so challenging but I will def so more ultra distances I just loved the event - might not have felt like that if weather was against me mind. Good luck!!

Strangely, bad weather isn't such a big deal in ultras, imho (caveat, I haven't done anything longer than 24 hours - no multi days like Spine or OMM etc.) because you have access to put on the right kit. If it's very cold and wet, you just layer up - hat, gloves, water proof jacket, trousers, whatever you need to stay dry or warm. In some ways, heat is more of a problem, because there is only a certain minimum amount of clothing you can go down to! :-O

There was no option in the 24 hour I was in. It went from blazing sunshine and t-shirt / running vest weather, to lashing hailstones and sub zero temperatures overnight. Needed several additional layers to weather that storm (pun intended!!) :-) G

GG I use mainly Salomon soft flasks as they fit my Salomon race vest best. I do have some other odds and sods (e.g. a couple of Likey's ones and at least one UD one that I got given somewhere). Salomon ones used to be prone to leaks from the seams on the shoulders but they redesigned them (and replaced any faulty ones) and I haven't had any issues with the current design over the last couple of years.

I'm so slow at Ultras fuelling isn't really an issue because I'm pretty much in fat burning mode. As others may have said what you fancy to eat during one Ultra you may not fancy at all at another. The big issue I have as a heavy sweater is hydration. And that has problems as for more than 24-hours I get bored of the same drink, so I have to mix that up as well.
