Oh, and don't worry about a few seconds/minutes to get something out of your pack. Once you've eaten, you'll more than make that back by not bonking/death marching in the later stages.

I agree with the "not worry about a few seconds..." point ou, but Gus also made the good point that, when you're completely drained, being "bothered to open" your back pack can be a hindrance in itself.
By the way, are you target ultras drop bags / self carried or do you have you own support crew? In the latter, your support crew can and must tempt / force you to eat! It's one of the most important crewing jobs (and one of the hardest!) G

My UD PB vest was a present from my wife in 2013 (I think) as I was too stingy to buy it for myself. It was brilliant and used in many races and training runs, including my biggest, target race, the West Highland Way. G

It's just a case of doing what you need to do though Happy, it's like taking your shoe off to get a stone out - you could just carry on, but it's not in your interest in the long term. You can choose not to do what's best in any situation - like putting on your jacket (or not) when it starts raining, and you'll get whatever outcome you get.
I've never had a crew (I can be a proper misery - I wouldn't wish me on anyone in a race situation ). Some races have drop bags, but I usually find I carry the majority of what I need from the start, so I've got a variety of things to eat.

Oh well I didn’t stop to take my shoe off with grit in neither and spent that long deliberating whether to get my jacket out that I was wet but then sun came out. I think the eat savoury early is a good one the sweets tend to make me feel sick and I would be more inclined to take my vest off early on too. All exceptionally helpful points thanks again.
The vest looks great I will put it out there ideal for LN too.
My little vest is decathlon and is great decent back pocket waterproof and lightweight it’s the smaller pockets so either new vest or bumbag I’ll gave a look. Cheers.

“Eat real savoury food early on - pork pie, mini sausage roll, cheese pickle sandwiches etc. that way your stomach has to keep working. Save the sugary stuff for later when you can't face chewing and your mouth is dry, but you aren't already knee deep in a sugar overload” is great advice
One thing for later on is to have a bag of ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ of your favourite sweets in a pocket. You might not fancy yet another jelly baby but an extra strong mint could just hit the spot right

There are two things that strike me
1) something you actually like / enjoy can have a huge boost in spirits when you’re flagging
2) believing in what you’re using is important. eg I don’t ‘believe’ in gels. A couple of teaspoons of gloopy snot can’t have any real impact (is my gut feeling - no pun intended)

It's something you need to experiment with. Like shoes, socks and pretty much everything else it's entirely personal and just because something works for someone else it won't neccessarily work for you. Personally I can go for over 24 hours fuelled pretty much entirely by gels (or more correctly these days Mountain Fuel Jellies which are less sticky) and drink sports (Mountain Fuel is my prefernce now but I've used Tailwind in the past) with the odd bit of solid fuel grabbed from CPs if the intensity is low enough (something like the Kielder 100K which was relatively runnable the intensity was too high to eat solid stuff). Gels have the advantage that they are easy to carry, use on the run and are generally less faff full stop BUT as others have said they don't work for everyone, so take the thoughts from here and elsewhere and do lots of experimenting in training.

I can’t stomach gels I can shot bloks to a point but they became too much during Kielder.
I think if I can sort out enough pockets and r. Seems all real food with squash in pockets so need to accept squashed food is ok i should manage a bit better. Lots to try. Appreciate all your responses. I’ll keep you posted.
