I'm finding the stuff I thought was heavy/hard as a kid (AC/DC being a prime example) is actually much tamer than I was led to expect.

Not sure if it can be included but the Thin Lizzy 'Live and Dangerous' album is brilliant. 1977?

Metallica was one of the few that I had to abandon before the end.

Well, if you want a bit of metal (thrash metal at that) you could try Death Angel "The Ultra-Violence" for 87 or Testament "The New Order" for 88. (Or the same bands' "Frolic In The Park" for 88 and "The Legacy" for 87.) Tbh I would be rather surprised if you enjoyed them ;-).
(I might go and see Death Angel in Glasgow next week.)

Showing my age, I saw Thin Lizzy on that Live and Dangerous Tour in 1977 (Bridlington Spa) - they were brilliant live

I'm envious macca. I did see Def Leppard in a tiny club by the Trent in 1981 in Nottingham though

1982: Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast 1983: Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones 1984: Metallica - Ride the Lightning 1985: The Jesus and Mary Chain - Physcocandy 1986: XTC - Skylarking
Never owned any Iron Maiden, despite my school friends being into them, and found this a predictable but enjoyable listen.
Tom Waits wasn't really my thing, but there's bits I enjoy in amongst the quirkiness and I'm giving a few more plays to see how much more it'll grow on me.
Really disappointed with first listen of Metallica. Aside from 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' (which I'd heard previously), the rest just sounded like tuneless / random noise and I was reminded why my kitchen radio is tuned to Planet Rock rather than Kerrang. Must've been in the wrong frame of mind however, as I found it more enjoyable and less 'grunty' when I forced a second playing.
I should really have picked someone new to me instead of The Jesus and Mary Chain, as I already have two of their later albums. It was billed as a classic however, so I didn't want to miss out. Only had one listen so far, but enjoyed the bouncy distortion!
XTC will get a listen at work tomorrow, if my colleagues take the hint that earphones mean 'leave me alone / don't disturb'.

I bought a copy of Marque Moon because of this thread. It's a real 'slow burner', but brilliant
