I suppose it's a bit odd that, as someone who uses heart rate monitoring assiduously in my training, I have pretty well no idea what my VO2max is! Probably somewhere between 1 and 100 ![]() |

LOL - I don't really care either tbh, but as Chrisull mentioned a few pages ago the way Garmin snottily removed the (albeit unexpected) feature a couple of years ago I now consider it a badge of honour that I've got the data restored!! At the end of the day, your race times are your fitness - no matter what the VO2max figures say! |

larkim, it's not that I don't care, I'd actually like to know. But obviously it's never been that important to me. I do want to get this and my HRmax checked out properly some time, though, out of curiosity (although I think the HRmax is actually the more useful figure).

I'd still maintain that VO2Max is somewhat irrelevant to performance and it's your, generally slightly lower, lactate threshold HR that tends to limit performance. The muscles will generally become lactate-laden before they run out of oxygen.

Agreed flanker. Some of the numbers are almost meaningless.

Still testing things out, mainly for Chrisull and myself with vivoactive watches, but noted that the VO2max score that is in the fit files is held by the watch, rather than being added after the event to the FIT file on GC. With a few activities logged this morning whilst pottering around the house I could upload those activities directly to Runalyze via USB rather than syncing them to GC, and the all had VO2Max figures in them. What I couldn’t do was to get them to change at all, but that could be just as well due to the fact that the activities were not significant ones. I did note that on the watch itself under the “About” page it notes that heartbeat analytics are provided by FirstBeat, and as the watch doesn’t actually explicitly have any analytics, I can only imagine that is because the calcs are hardwired into the chipset on the watch, and then suppressed from being displayed by firmware. I might have a go at coding something which allows for VO2max to be displayed on the watch via a widget, but I’ve not coded a widget before so that might come to naught! |

the calcs are hardwired into the chipset on the watch, and then suppressed from being displayed That would be my take, too. Odd decision, which does seem awfully like "you want these, spend more money", which is a perfectly reasonable business decision if it hadn't been taken so far into the watch's sale lifetime.

Yes, it feels like a minor cock up. Honestly I doubt anyone other than Garmin themselves really thinks including VO2 Max calc on the watch would influence a buying decision, but it may also be a licencing thing - they'll be paying to FirstBeat for their tech, so perhaps having it on the chip but unused results in lower costs to Garmin too. I'll continue exploring!! |

Regarding the earlier discussion about chest strap v wrist strap accuracy, I wore my chest strap for my slow run to and from PR. I did not notice any difference in the HR but the profile of the HR curve is much smoother; indicating less variation/artefact over the course of the run. I will do a direct comparison on my next run with both being used at the same time. This should highlight the actual difference in the readings, if any. |

This was what Garmin said at the time: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/health-fitness/vivoactive-hr/131300-vo2-max/page2?350781-VO2-Max= basically that it was never meant to be enabled & visible. There's a connect IQ field you can use to collect external as well as OHR on the same device, Andrew: apps.garmin.com |
