Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

According to the email we have to mark the course on the map ourselves (or more likely with help) so I assume this gives me more of an idea where I am supposed to be going rather than following a pre marked course. (Hopefully)

Anyway, I quote: "If you start early and find orange too easy you can go and run the light green as well."
This fellow is an optimist. :-)

I've looked on the British Orienteering website so have a fair idea what to expect regarding maps.

Oooh, marking your own course is what we had to do in olden days. The ones I do now tend to be pre-printed. But yes, marking the controls on the map will give you a chance to familiarise yourself with it. If you are using a compass (and, for an orange course, you don't necessarily need one), be sure not to try & take a bearing & charge direct from control to control. Use the paths.

Not sure I remember how to do bearings.

And to think I was the navigator on Boys Brigade outings.

Anyway, nice chatting, got to go now.

Good job I checked things.
The Derby event is tomorrow (Saturday) and not Sunday like I thought.

Well I enjoyed that, despite coughing and wheezing all the way round due to a chest infection.
There seemed to be a bit of inner club rivalry/cheating out there though.

As everything was set up old style (punch cards not dibbers) some people where doing the checkpoints in random order, I thought the idea was to do them in a set order ??

Off to the British Orienteering site now to look for another event.

You are supposed to do them in order, yes. If you've got a dibber, you will be disqualified if you don't do them in order. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

Hi Quimby
Just looked at the results, at least I didn't come last. :-)

12th out of 16, but I lost quite a bit of time running round in circles looking for the last checkpoint. I was looking for the number of the previous one by mistake. I looked at it 3 times thinking I needed to find 210 (previous cp) when I actually had the right one at 211.

Learnt from one of the clubs kids that it is easier if you write cp numbers on map rather than keep looking at a seperate piece of paper. We live and learn.
