Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thanks from me for the cup of tea too, DT, and to Stef for the veggie stew.

Good to see you too Simon. Great that Brett managed to put the event on and I really enjoyed the afternoon in the kitchen plus catching up with some old friends

It's a shame that what may well turn out to be my last fell race of the year was such a poor performance! That we nailed every inch of the nav the whole way only to get lost in Haworth at the end and lose 10 mins was just salt in the wound.

How do people nav through the back streets, alleys and snickets - I find OS maps useless for that - there's just too many lines to make anything out, and trying to follow a bearing when there are so many dead-ends and kinks seems futile. Is it just a case of having to recce it?

For Haworth, as I'd only done it once before 6 years ago I did some recces on google maps and then had a little walk before the start to fix the finish in my head. For me the key on Saturday was aim for the church (you can see it as you come off Penistone Hill) and then have a look at the last few bits before the start. The rest of it I did from map memory (my map never left my bag) and what I'd learnt from google. I had a couple of hesitations that maybe cost me a minute but otherwise error free. One advantage of not having your head in your map/gps is that you tend to run with your head up and as a result pick up clues further in advance. Map memory is something that is worth forcing yourself to practice. Learn to extract the key nav points and then execute without looking at the map. And as for a compass in a race like the Hobble it's effectively useless unless the vis is very low, there are more than enough clear visual clues if you've done some homework.

A group of us had a social run round the Bunny Run route up on Penistone Hill on Sunday morning and ran back into the village afterwards. I thought I knew my way round reasonably well but we went up and down a few lanes I’d never been on before on the way back to where we started by the Sun

Indeed, it does look like the Hobble was a last hurrah for a while.

"As Government policy has changed, so must the FRA's. We must therefore now advise all FRA Race Organisers to cancel or postpone their races for the foreseeable future".

In other news, the Barkley Marathons are now cancelled too.

I’d have thought Barkley Marathons would have been a good chance for runners to self isolate for a few days ;-)

There is an Orienteering map of Haworth that shows all the ginnels.

Cheers ff, some good advice.

The map didn't come out until well into the race as I had most of it fixed in my head. It was used in anger twice; once where there was where there was some taping as I wanted to confirm it wasn't for us, and just before the golf course at the 5-way junction (having used all the options in the past I had a moment of self-doubt which went where).

The only bit I hadn't prep'ed was the last mile into town. Last time out I was running with a local who lead us in. I thought I'd remember it, but I didn't - I even forgot about heading for the church. Lesson learnt :-)

It does also helps when half the route is in areas you run regularly.
